As Tax Day approaches and we are forced to see the heavy hand of the government dragging our finances down. I have decided to quickly run through the IRS’ continuing attempts to reach deeper into the pockets of Americans. As a college student, I admit I may not be as sensitive as those with full time jobs bearing the majority of the burden however, I do work at 3 different jobs and file taxes. I realize many students do not have jobs or even file their own taxes making it very easy for them to enjoy all the government does (however inefficiently) without realizing what it is costing everyone else (hence the liberal student majority). So I have decided to detail some tax issues and solutions.

First, the facts (From the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance):

  1. Wisconsin taxes are the 5th highest in the nation (only 1.35% off the liberal tax and spend capital, New York)
  2. The Badger state ranks 50th in the nation for retirement friendliness due to the tax burden
  3. Despite the valiant tax freeze efforts of our Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and State Legislators, WI has moved up from 11th to 9th worst property taxes in the nation.
  4. On a national and state level liberals and the IRS continue to find new ways to complicate and increase taxes as the National Taxpayers Union’s Blog, Government Bytes describes some of these measures:

“both sides, consumer and producer, are going to get the surplus squeeze. Not only are states seeking sales and use taxes from online cigarette purchasers, but the IRS wants the income tax on the profit from your eBay “yard sale”. States have taught the Fed a valuable lesson– credit card companies cave under pressure. Payment services like PayPal and Bidpay are now very vulnerable.”

TABOR Chart
How do concerned citizens fight this continuing tax creep?

1. Maintain hope! President Bush’s tax relief abolished the death tax, made it cheaper for small businesses to purchase new equipment and decreased many personal taxes on a national level. Tell Sen. Herb Kohl and Sen. Russell Feingold to make tax relief permanent!

2. Support TABOR! A taxpayer bill of rights has allowed Colorado to give back $8 billion to it’s residents in rebates and tax breaks due to it’s TABOR limiting government spending and increasing efficiency. Sign the TABOR petition today!

3. Support Voter ID! Although somewhat unrelated, accurate elections free of fraud ensure the correct candidate that will fight for our economic freedom get’s into office. Tell Doyle Wisconsin wants Voter ID!
