I am a huge fan of the nickname Jumping Jesuits. Think of the showdowns … the Marquette Jumping Jesuits vs. the Providence Friars or the Jumping Jesuits vs. the Fighting Irish. If we can’t be the Jumping Jesuits (Brent Bray believes the Jesuits vetoed this name in ’94 and will do so again if it is brought up) my next choice is the Golden Avalanche. That begs the question, what would be a suitable mascot? Earlier tonight Dan Maciejewski and I had a great idea: the St. Bernard rescue dogs. The people at MarquetteHoops.com had a very similar idea. I guess great minds think alike. What’s more, something the MarquetteHoops’ folks didn’t mention- the St. Bernard dog is named after a Catholic saint, Saint Bernard, who started a hospice for weery and lost travelers in the Swiss Alps in the 11th century. The refuge remains open to this day, run by four Augustinian monks. So, Golden Avalanche offers the opportunity to weave our Marquette Athletic tradition in with one of the great stories of the Catholic tradition.
Go to the poll and vote for Jumping Jesuits or Golden Avalanche! Do it now!

The (Jumpin’) Jesuits has serious support. I’ve heard it suggested from lots of people who “thought it up” independently. Who should we email to make sure it’s actually considered when they decide which names to put on the ballot?
Daniel-
I posted this on another thread too, but the reason Jumping Jesuits won’t get any support has to do with the following:
“Does anyone know the meaning of Jumpin‚Äô Jesuits‚ĶThere‚Äôs a reason it won‚Äôt happen. It stems from a tale where a priest at Gesu, not being able to supposedly deal with issues of homosexuality, jumped out of a fifth floor window at Johnston Hall‚ĶI believe.”
It could be rumor, but that’s where I believe the term originally came from.
errr… it’s also an alliteration that has some relation to basketball… and a lot of people think the idea of the Marquette Jesuits has merit. That’s why “jumpin’” was in a parenthetical… it would probably be more of an informal nickname for the “Marquette Jesuits” if this actually took off.
Or maybe you’re going over the deep end again. Lighten up!
Daniel-
No, I’m just stating where I heard this idea originally came from and why it might not carry water with the Jesuits and the Jesuit Catholic ideals. I’m not bashing the idea. I like it…I understand that other than Warriors, it was the top write-in back in 1994 too. I’m just saying that someone should research whether this would be considered a ‘wasted’ write-in vote if it’s not on the ballot. I’m assuming it wouldn’t be because of the other connotations. I understand the basketball relationship, but there apparently is this other relationship that it was originally tied to back in 1994.
