Wisconsin’s liberals know they’re fighting an uphill battle in this state. Even though we’re a blue state, we’re blue-collar conservatives. Liberals know that by en large Wisconsinites would oppose using their hard earned tax dollars to pay for gay partner benefits. So since they know the issue is a loser, they’ve decided to launch an “ad hominem” attack on the public interest firm that the Legislature is working with to represent the state in an attempt to divert attention from their unpopular initiative.

Xoff is, as ever, a reliable nexus for the attacks on “SpongeJohn GardPants” and the Alliance Defense Fund.

Both the Wisconsin State Journal and Madison Capital Times go after the Legislature’s decision in stories today.

The Madison Capital Times editorializes (their second on the subject):

Editorial: Gard’s national embarrassment
I have seen no evidence of national coverage of this issue. When I typed “assembly” “speaker” “john gard” into Google News I found only two stories out of state- one from 365Gay.com and one from the Minnesota Pioneer Press, which often covers Wisconsin news. So to say that the story is “national” is just plain wrong.
Second, I’d challenge the word “embarrassment.” I’m sure if you went to Mr. Gard’s district in Peshtigo or the 8th Congressional District, the folks there would tell you he’s doing a pretty good job on this issue. Same with a lot of other folks across the state. It is an “embarrassment” only to the extent that the Cap Times and its MSM liberal allies are trying desperately to make it one.

Unfortunately, the Alliance Defense Fund has been associated with some of the wackier instances of anti-gay extremism to surface in recent years. The fund’s co-founder has devoted inordinate amounts of time to arguing that the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is gay. He has also called for a “second civil war” – over cultural issues – in the United States.
No mention of the name of this co-founder. It is, in fact, Doctor James Dobson of Focus on the Family. Of course, the Cap Times wouldn’t want to mention his name or organization, because if they did then people would be a lot more willing to trust him than the paper, since he is one of America’s most well-known and respected Christian voices. Ahhh Wooo Ga! (that’s a fog horn sound typed out, btw).

The Wisconsin State Journal has a story as well. A few points:

The conservative public interest law firm funded the fight to keep the comatose Terry [sic] Schiavo alive in Florida for years.
You may agree or disagree with the fight for Terri’s life but when the nation was torn in two nearly equal sides as it was in this case, to label a group leading one side “extremist” seems off-base.

Last month, the group sponsored a “Day of Truth” during school hours to let students “share God’s love with those trapped in homosexual behavior in a respectful and non- disruptive manner.”
The “Day of Truth,” it must be noted” was timed to occur on the same day as the “National Day of Silence” – “a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in collaboration with the United States Student Association (USSA), is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment — in effect, the silencing — experienced by LGBT students and their allies.” So this “Day of Truth” must be contextualized as an Evangelical Christian response to the gay activists’ “Day of Silence.”

“It is tragic to see legislative leaders politicize a matter best left up to the courts,” said Justice Department spokesman Scot Ross.
I’m sorry- who’s doing the politicizing here? Is it the legislative leaders, who chose to hire a law firm (incidentally the people who do work on matters in “the courts”) or is it the Capital Times, Xoff, and Mark Pocan, who are issuing one editorial or press release after another blasting Gard and the GOP leadership? I suggest to you it is the latter, and not the former.
