In light of the FDA’s recent approval of over the counter Plan B sales, I have to post this satirical piece from ScrappleFace in it’s entirety. It is poignant and on target.

FDA OKs O-T-C Sale of Plan B, Mulls Plan C
by Scott Ott(2006-08-25) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which this week approved over-the-counter sales of the post-conception contraceptive known as Plan B, today said it would also consider permitting broad access to an experimental drug known as Plan C.
Plan B, which prevents a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus, will soon be available without a prescription to people over 18. But according to the new FDA guidelines, “minor girls will still need a doctor’s order, or an adult boyfriend who can simply walk into the Wal-Mart pharmacy and buy the drug for her without a prescription.â€
Plan C, a medication still in clinical trials, would not only discharge the embryo from the uterus, but would also stop the heart of the woman, and thus provide a surefire method of preventing more unwanted pregnancies.
“It’s a breakthrough drug,†said one unnamed FDA official. “It doesn’t just treat the symptoms, but really deals with the cause.â€
A spokesman for the manufacturer of Plan C, tried to play down expectations until after the clinical trial results are in, calling his company’s FDA application “a modest proposal to reduce the burden on our nation caused by unwanted pregnancies.â€
Pro-choice activists hailed the Plan B decision as a way to cut down on what the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) calls “icky abortions, where you can see the little hands and feet and head and stuff.â€
“It’s important to get rid of the baby when it’s still a little blob of protoplasm,†said an unnamed NARAL source, “that way women and girls are less troubled by irrational guilt, or recurring thoughts of what the child would have looked like, or might have been.â€
In addition, the NARAL source said, Plan B will improve self-esteem by making it easier for a girl to get and keep a boyfriend, since “nothing interferes with a man’s love like the threat of responsibility.â€
I have had a number of my friends (male and female) bring up their concern around this decision due to the fact that Plan B “tears your insides out” and will now be used as a form of birth control and an excuse to have unprotected sex. Wether this opinion is scientific or not, it has been voiced by the people who are actually effected by it.

I’m very grateful that this drug is now available over the counter, so women who are victims of rape or incest can at least ensure that they won’t have to carry their attacker’s baby, even if they’re initially too afraid to report the crime to the police (which many women are, especially if the rapist is someone close to them). Yeah, Plan B might be used as a means for *some* women to have unprotected sex, but I’m sure the syphllis will have the last laugh there.
Although, the facetiousness of the article does bring up an interesting thought… no doubt Plan B was invented by male doctors moreso as a means to put the pressure on women to be safe rather than encouraging men to come prepared. The last quote of the article is made that much funnier because of how true it is…
Plan B, doesn’t “tear your insides out.” You’re thinking of a chemical abortions.
Plan B prevents fertilization, ovulation, or implantation of the fertilized egg, depending on the point the woman is in her ovulation cycle.
And actually, the people directly affected by Plan B are those who choose to use it, not those have talked to.
