A perfect response

As reported by Drudge, Speaker Hastert wrote a letter to Atty. Gen. Gonzales requesting a formal investigation into the debauchery of Congressman Mark Foley (R-Fla.). As we all know by now, Foley liked to talk dirty with Congressional Pages (note: these are high school juniors). The letter is very clear in its intentions, clearly laying out the case as Hastert has it, and asking for a complete investigation into the matter.

I say it’s one hell of a response. Exactly what the GOP needed to do. In a way, I would argue that this might even be a blessing for the GOP. It lets the GOP turn on one of their own — it allows the GOP to throw someone out to the wolves who have been chomping at the bits for something like this to happen. It also allows them to rally together right before an election. While the seat in Florida may come into question, the response from Hastert and other Congressional leaders clearly shows that this matter is a serious issue (as it should).

Yes, it did originally look bad for Foley, but he resigned quickly, the GOP slashed all ties and in not showing any special favors to him have hopefully won over a few independents in this year’s election. Or, maybe these independents will think all GOP reps. are just like Foley and the majority with crash and burn. But who really knows such things.

We’ll find out this November. Yay justice, boo dirt bags.
