Mehlman out, Steele in?

That’s right the RNC has asked Michael Steele to take over the party starting the first of the year. Ken Mehlman proved instrumental in both the 2000 and 2004 Presidential campaigns, and during his tenure as RNC chair he revolutionized campaigning and get out the vote efforts.

The article notes that this is not part of the post-election leadership purge, Mehlman had made the decision to leave last summer:

Mr. Mehlman said he “told the White House over the summer it was my decision” to leave the RNC post, “win, lose or draw.”

Michael Steele, current Lt. Gov. of Maryland and former Senate candidate ran a fantastic campaign in Maryland. Known for his down-to-earth style, and his hilarious campaign ads, he has been considered perfect to take the RNC into the future.

Still, the article notes that Steele hasn’t made a decision on if he will take the post, and could be offered something else:

President Bush’s political adviser Karl Rove, who is Mr. Mehlman’s mentor, would rather see Mr. Steele serve in the president’s Cabinet, perhaps as secretary of Housing and Urban Development. These officials said no one has actually offered Mr. Steele either the RNC post or a Cabinet post.

No doubt the change in leadership will bring a new direction for the party. I think it’s a good thing. Ken Mehlman did some good things while he was there, and now it could be Michael Steele’s turn to further that effort. Plus, Michael Steele is the man, and he loves puppies.

UPDATE:  Washington Post reports Steele “not likely to become chairman”.  Mehlman is out for sure… more information when it becomes available… thanks to commenter “John” for the tip…

The Washington Post is saying Steele turned it down.

  2. SPET3R Says:

I would welcome a chair like Steele. We need a more common sense Republican Party returning to Ronald Reagan. The get out the vote efforts worked in 2004 and 2000 when sentiment was good toward Republicans… but when it came to winning voters over to our side, it failed.
