From the Journal Sentinel:
A Wauwatosa psychiatrist has been charged with having repeated sexual contact with one of his patients.
Charles Michael Grade, 43, faces three counts of sexual exploitation by a therapist, a felony punishable by up to 12½ years in prison. County jail records indicated Friday evening that Grade was in jail and that no bail had been set.
Grade has been a licensed psychiatrist since 1991, according to state records. He did his residency at the Sinai Samaritan Medical Center and is listed as a consulting psychiatrist at the Marquette University Counseling Center.
He was arrested Wednesday, just hours after what a criminal complaint charges was his third sexual contact with the same patient. Grade’s practice is listed at 1220 N. Dewey Ave. He lives in Milwaukee.
According to the complaint filed Friday, Grade had sex with a female patient shortly after she began seeing him in June 2005. She saw him as a patient once a month from then forward, the complaint says, and she told detectives that they had sexual contact “during a number of their therapy sessions,” including occurrences in early October and again Wednesday.
The complaint also indicates Grade spoke with a detective Wednesday evening and admitted “a sexual conversation . . . that he knew was inappropriate,” and touching his patient, that day. (emphasis added)
Some questions:
- What contact has Grade had with Marquette students?
- Has Grade ever been allowed to be alone with Marquette students?
- What is the hiring process and depth of psychological evaluation of Marquette counselors, not to mention staff in general?
I can’t wait to see how Marquette spins this one. Absolutely disgusting.

Charged. Not convicted. Psychiatrists are alone with patients for reasons of confidentiality–to protect their privacy. You second questions insinuates that Marquette is some how negligent for this reality of therapy.
Questions about screening are fair. And if the guy is guilty, he’s truly vile for violating the psychiatrist-patient relationship. But you’re (unfairly) spinning this yourself…and it’s before Marquette even has a chance to.
And it could very well be possible that this is a one time thing with this one patient and he has no prior history and Marquette holds no liability. We’ll have to wait see about that though.

Just changed the headline!

Once is one time too many. I think all Marquette would have to say is a problem was revealed and after fault was confirmed he was removed. That aside he is a Marquette employee and Marquette is responsible for his actions to some degree. This will largely be out of Marquette’s hands though, I think. If he gets his license revoked, which automatically happens with a felony conviction, he won’t be able to practice anyway. It amazes me anyone who spent that much time in school to be a psychiatrist would throw it all away like that. The things people do for lust.
Is he a psychiatrist or a psychologist? It seems strange that a psychiatrist would be doing therapy sessions on a regular basis.

I reread it. It does say psychiatrist.

The psychiatrist is not in fact an MU employee, he is contracted by MU to hold sessions at the MU Counseling Center. His employer is Aurora Health Care.

This is such typical psychiatrist behavior all I can say is “yawn” - and investigate and prosecute vigorously. The skeletons will tumble out of the closet like leaves from a tree in autumn.

“yawn”? that certainly was not my reaction to the allegations. I am a Marquette student who was scheduled for a consultation with him this week. For what you might ask? Sexual assault. It makes me a little angry that while sadly this may happen alot, students can be so nonchalant about it.

amazes me how the press assumes the worst about the male shrink and nothing about the 42 yr old drug addict who came in with a wire tap to her session. amazes me how his name is published, where he works where he lives. reminds me of the rape victim, her name in the paper, her photo…what ever happened to protection. and innocent til proven guilty., but they go to his house. all his employers drop him like a hot potato. put his photo on the news., asking for all the others to come forward. has to make us pause that noone has. what about if/when he’s proven innocent.? will there be press coverage then? what about his family?
and ‘yawn’, wow. hope you aren’t seeking employment that will have you anywhere near breathing people
