February means the V-Day Wars

It’s already starting. February means Valentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day means V-Day, and V-Day means fights between leftist-feminist students and Catholic university administrations over the Vagina Monologues.

The New York Post reports:

There’s something about “The Vagina Monologues” that’s rubbing St. John’s University the wrong way.
Charging that the hit play is “unsuitable” and against the values that inspired one of the largest Roman Catholic universities in the country, administrators have pulled the plug on a student production of the play on the Queens campus.
Students had been aiming to stage a performance in late February, working with a group called V-Day that organizes benefit productions of the play to help eradicate violence against women.
But administrators quashed the effort, claiming that the play could incite controversy. “We took great care in weighing the issues and concluded that the performance, by its very nature, was unsuitable subject matter in keeping with Catholic teachings and our Vincentian mission,” the Rev. James Maher, vice president of student affairs, said.
He said the university supports “raising awareness and education on systemic violence against women.” But he added, “As part of our obligation to the entire university community, we also reserve the right not to support student life activities that we deem inappropriate.”

Many of you will recall that Marquette had its own Vagina Monologues battle last year…

Will liberals on campus attempt to force the issue again this year? Last year’s denial by the Administration wobbled on the “short time frame” for a quality production as a rationale… Will campus liberals get the ball rolling now to deny the Administration that excuse?

When asked in an interview whether Marquette would allow the play in the future, Thon said: “I couldn’t say. You deal with each case as it arises.”

SJU has already stood strong by its values. We’ll see if Marquette is offered an opportunity to do so as well this year.

Actually, the Honors Program is putting on the Vagina Monologues on April 14th as an educational program, the way it should be. Go ahead and check, it’s already been approved.

The neocons hate sexual things. Otherwise they’d have had some hillbilly write about ‘the other organ’.

    The Penis Plattitudes.

I doubt if the writer ever saw the play, but still takes the ‘right’ to review it.

On behalf of neocons, please allow me to refine your statement, Joe.
Neocons like sex. They even like “sexual things.” They understand, however, there is an appropriate setting in which “sexual things” should arise, and that is not on a stage exposing repugnant acts such as pedophilia and homosexual rape.

    Interesting way to combat it:

[...] Now, that same paper relies on it’s political adversaries for sources while it pines for the day when they and the Administration controlled the flow of debate at Marquette. [...]
