I hate to be the one to say this

As I was paging through my latest Maxim issue, I happen to read that the world is going to be dinosaured in less than 30 years. The asteroid, Apophis, is 300 meters in diameter, Maxim said the size of the Rose Bowl, that will come within 20,000 miles of Earth in the year 2029. (For reference 20,000 miles is closer than our weather satellites are to earth.) Coming that close to earth will mean that Apophis’ orbit will change enough that it will come back around and hit us in the year 2036. However we can’t go Bruce Willis nuclear on the asteroid because that would create millions of smaller, yet still deadly asteroids.

NASA astronaut and former University of Hawaii solar physicist Edward Lu is calling for a new spacecraft that would divert asteroids on a path to slam into Earth.

The small space tractor, costing between $200 million and $300 million, would hover near an asteroid to exert enough gravitational pull that the space rock’s orbit would change and a collision with our planet would be averted, Lu said before a crowd packed into a 300-capacity auditorium at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Monday night.

“We’re only trying to get a really tiny change in the velocity of the asteroid to prevent an impact,” he said.

If that doesn’t work we can always create a huge cavern in the limestone of Missouri that will house one-million people and lots of plants and animals. (Deep Impact –anybody?)

If this really does happen (there is about 1-10,000 chance), at least civilization has had a good run; a few ups and downs, but overall pretty good. At least all the smokers will beat the negative effects of smoking, and as a planet, we will outlast global warming.

Again, I’m sorry to break this to everyone.

1 in 10,000 chance is a pretty good chance… doesn’t that mean there is more of a chance of this happening instead of us getting struck by lightning? Damn Global Warming! I blame Global Warming!
