We continue today with our series featuring Catholic higher education leaders who have stood up to the forces of political correctness to stand for Bible values. Today we salute the leadership of the Very Rev. David O’Connell, C.M., president of the Catholic University of America, the only pontifical university in America.
According to a report last year in the CUA student newspaper, The Tower, President Fr. O’Connell issued the following statement concerning the Vagina Monologues:
I have read the play and have actually seen it performed on a television broadcast. I find the play crude, ugly, vulgar and unworthy of staging or performing at CUA in any venue whatsoever.
I believe that CUA, its excellent Drama department, and the cause of promoting the dignity of women deserve much better than this play and can find much better expression than this play presents.
In addition to the affront and offense posed to Catholic teachings and values by some aspects of the play, it has become a symbol each year of the desire of some folks to push Catholic campuses over the edge of good and decent judgment.
Sooner or later, someone has got to simply say ‘enough.’ I am saying ‘enough’ and I’ll take whatever criticism is hurled my way as a badge of honor for CUA, its mission, its values and all that it represents. I took this position last year, this year and I’ll take it again next year and every year I am here.
Now that is a strong statement. And he is right that the play has become a symbol - that was my litmus test argument on an earlier post.
In an interview with USA Today, Fr. O’Connell also fought the false either/or choice Monologues advocates usually advance.

The courage! The courage! Let us build a statue for those willing to sacrifice themselves on the altar of the vagina monologues. These gentlemen will certainly be cannonized and Daniel will be glorified for ever and ever, amen.

I too stand for Bible values. As such, I say we kill every non-Jewish first born child in Milwaukee! Also, we must smite San Francisco with magnesium missiles since it is there that man sleeps with man.
Seriously, you say Bible values but don’t you just mean your Bible values? Why don’t you guys all just convert to Judaism (that is if they would take you) because really all the issues that you support on the grounds of them being Bible based come from the Old Testament. Old Testament God, not Jesus, would support the war in Iraq, deny health care to the poor, and persecute gays.

Daniel, how about this from Paul:
“Those who are slaves must consider their masters worthy of all respect, so that no one will speak evil of the name of God and of our teaching. Slaves belonging to Christian masters must not despise them, for they are their brothers.” (1 Timothy 6:1-2).
