Whatever anyone else says about Barack Obama’s run for the presidency, this much is true: He has a cool looking logo.

In an awesome New York Times op-ed Ryan brought to my attention two years ago, a graphic designer wrote:

If we’ve learned one thing about this year’s presidential campaign, it’s that message is king. But while the pundits have spent innumerable hours parsing the minutiae of each candidate’s oral communications, they have had nothing to say about the visual messages of the two candidates. As a graphic artist, I find this distressing. And as a Democrat, I’m sorry to have to declare President Bush the frontrunner in the competition for the best logo. Logos can be powerful, and they’re all about subliminal messages.

The writer went on to dissect the Bush and Kerry logos and declared Bush the winner for a good number of reasons. His piece prompted a fair number of response letters as well, arguing both sides.

The debate has already begun on Obama’s logo for 2008:

obama

I think the ’08 seems to crowd the Obama a little, but I understand the need to have the ’08 because we’re in 2007 and people are running for office in 2008. But that left O image is just awesome – the rising sun effect reinforces his new generation of leadership and positive optimism message perfectly. I’m a fan.

I would have darkened the symbol to the left a bit and used it as the O in O’Bama… it’s obviously supposed to represent the letter anyway, which makes the logo seem to read “O O’Bama ’08″ to me.

    But what do I know?

You’re the recipient of my very first blog link. I made a few tweeks to the logo to make it more web 2.0 complient. Take a look at http://jimspice.blogspot.com/2007/02/obama-20.html

Daniel, there was something kinda warm and fuzzy about that entry. Kudos.

Looks like Sprint’s old logo, or lexis.

I think its too compolicated for the democratic voting base.

No… I don’t think its too complicated because it fits their mold. Most Graphic Designers are Democrats… therefore the logo will look pretty. Unfortunately for Obama, Hillary is going to rip him to shreds. In the process, she’ll be brought down by Hillary. Either John Edwards or Richardson will win the primary. I don’t see any reason why Richardson wouldn’t… he just needs a little media
