4 Steps to Increased Conservative Influence (through Digg)

Written by Brandon Henak on February 16, 2007 – 2:55 pm -

Welcome, if you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or subscribe to our email newsletter. Thanks for visiting!

Let’s face it, conservative blogging has flourished largely do to the fact that the Mainstream Media (the Clinton News Network, CBS, etc) is largely liberal and in many cases, blatantly false. Conservatives have responded by expressing themselves through blogs and exposing media bias. In short, we do our best to promote and expose the truth that is often ignored, hidden and denied due to liberal media bias.

The next step in this effort is to stay ahead of the new media game. As part of our PoliTech category, I work to expose ways conservatives can inform themselves and influence the marketplace of ideas most effectively. One way is through Digg.

Digg, for those who do not already utilize it, is a social news site that allows users to flag stories as interesting by “digging” them (You can digg our stories here at Gop3.com through the Digg This! link at the bottom of every post.). As more users digg a story, it works it’s way to the front page and gains increased exposure and reads (to the tune of thousands, even tens of thousands of readers). Currently, liberals are leading the way on digg, liberal candidates and opinions make it to the front page more often and therefore gain greater influence.

We cannot let this continue if we want to continue to expose the faults of the liberal ideology to as many people as possible. If we do not take the time to be involved and promote (digg in this case) the right ideas, we will be ultimately beaten, not just in exposure but across the US in political campaigns.

Here is what I propose:

  1. 1. Go to digg.com and register.
  2. 2. Post your digg username as a comment on this post.
  3. 3. Add your follow conservative diggers from the comments section of this post as your friends in digg. (Login to digg, click on your profile link on the top middle of the page, then click on the Friends tab).
  4. 4. Click on the Friends tab again and you should see all the news your friends have “dugg” lately, you can then digg all the interesting news you see with the knowledge that you are promoting oft ignored conservative news and opinions to millions who may never have seen it.

See thats the thing, you don’t get the fact that its not liberal bias (nor has it ever been liberal bias on digg), its logical bias. When things are popular because they are logical it doesn’t equate to bias. You’ll never be able to “counter act” a bias that doesn’t exist, especially on a freely available site that is more often visited by those employed in the “LOGIC” industry. Have you forgotten that our jobs are exactly… IF this = false, then do this. This is not a realm of bias, we are not pushing an agenda, just voting the RIGHTY CRAZIES off the island because you’re so illogical it makes our teeth hurt. Nice try to push your agenda regardless of the merit of your argument. Truthiness at its best!

    Cheers.

An easier way to find like-minded people would be to go through AdmiralAdama’s friends list at digg. He’s got over 500 friends there.

Adam Says: “… we are not pushing an agenda, just voting the RIGHTY CRAZIES off the island …”

Wow, he’s so blinded by his own world-view he can’t even see how stupid that sounds. He’s like one of the Hamas terrorists who will only be happy when they push all the Jews into the mediterranean.

At any rate, thanks for the invitation. I’ve just added “bhenak” to my list of digg friends and I look forward to ‘digg’ing all your posts.

    Regards,

Neocons, who have so far been gaming Digg underground, have decided to go public with their campaign, and even have the audacity to post a link to a blog where Diggers are gathering with the sole intention of pushing the conservative agenda through social media.

Good luck, but I think what you’ll find is that you’re out of touch with reality. It might be a learning experience, please join. It’s no shock that yet again, you guys are late to the party………

  9. 1389 Says:

    1389 says,

Here are some useful tips I’ve picked up from reading comments and articles from more experienced Diggers:

To see stories that your friends have submitted:
    http://digg.com/users/(your_own_user_ID)/friends/news/submitted

To see stories that your friends have commented on:
    http://digg.com/users/(your_own_user_ID)/friends/news/comments

To see stories that your friends have Dugg:
    http://digg.com/users/(your_own_user_ID)/friends/news/dugg

To see stories that more than one of your friends have Dugg:
    http://digg.com/users/1389/friends/news/agreed

To see who has befriended you:
    http://digg.com/users/(your_own_user_ID)/friends/befriended

To display a large number of titles of upcoming Digg articles on one page, so that you can identify and display the stories you want to read, and decide whether or not to Digg them:
    http://digg.com/news/upcoming/cloud/most

You will soon find out that liberals on the Internet do all of the things that they accuse conservatives of doing, and more. Especially trolling! Even so, I don’t advise anyone to get drawn into an argument with trolls of any stripe (politically-motivated or otherwise), simply because they are never interested in your evidence or your logic. Trolls are a pointless distraction. Don’t get discouraged, and don’t feed the trolls!

  10. jim spice Says:

The math involved in Digg, or any of the other social bookmarking sites, is fairly straight forward tallymarking, and is therefore amenable to this type of jury-rigging. Keep in mind though, that the algorythms at Google, Yahoo and MSN are much more complex, taking into account the relationships between site and surfer, click streams, trends, etc, and punish sites that attempt to manipulate rankings. Be careful not to shoot yourself in the foot.

By the way, as someone admitedly a bit left of center, I see the media as more conservative than me. The old joke goes “every newspaper has a business section, but I can never find the labor section”? And with the advent of entire networks that are unabashedly convervative, it has gotten more obvious.

This is not necessarily out of line with the right’s view of the MSM. If the media were in the middle, where I beleive it should be, both oberservations would be correct.

  11. Digidave Says:

Um hey. Consider this a nonpartisan comment.

I don’t think a conservative group or a liberal group should try to ban together to “take over digg.” It goes against the nature of the site — (and the terms of agreement).

It’s not about influence, power, or any kind of bias. People act as individuals. Vote and submit for what you like — if they are good ideas/stories, they will make it to the front page regardless because people will recognize them as such.

The second groups come together to try and sway the tide in a specific direction, that’s when things get ugly, people start crying foul and the whole community suffers. Don’t be that guy!

Think of social news sites as a dinner party that’s already taking place. Even if it is a “liberal party” I ask you this: What’s a better way to change the party? Show up with 50 of your friends, kicking down the door — and yelling at everyone? Or — showing up with a bottle of wine, ready to chime in the conversation when things get more comfortable. I say it again — don’t be that guy at the party that everyone wishes didn’t show up. That won’t help your cause at all.

I’ll leave it up to you how to proceed. (But note — doing this in public might be a cause for banning your accounts — breaking the terms of service: I don’t know, haven’t looked at them closely in awhile).

    Peace

  12. Kat, Brandon's cousin Says:

I really don’t have any comment on the post itself, but I feel compelled to comment that Adam in no way speaks for me. I may be a liberal, but I also believe there are (at least) two sides to every story. Part of why I come to this blog is to hear the conservative side of the story. Sometimes, I even find myself in agreement with the conservatives.

Adhering blindly to a political ideology no matter what is an act of ignorance.

  13. Brandon Henak Says:

My intent was never to “take over” Digg or anything close to it. I understand and appreciate Digg for it’s nature and would never disobey it’s terms of use. If anything, I am just attempting to explain and encourage it’s use by an audience that does not utilize it fully. Consider it a clarion call for conservative digging.

Like I said before, Liberals will spin anything anyway they want. They are already castigating you for “gaming Digg”. Even though I am a neo-con myself, I am quite upset with what you’ve done. I am sorry that I have to say this, but you have just provided fodder to the liberals. Your actions are hurting our cause. Whatever you do, don’t play into the hands of these groups.

God bless you and God bless America.

  15. Jacob Says:

I’m further left than Chomsky and I think you’ve got a fantastic idea. Digg has a clear sampling bias and it would benefit from a plurality of opinions. This sort of thing is exactly what Democrats mean by “grassroots campaigning”.

  16. YO-MOMMA Says:

This neocon paranoid bullshit makes me laugh!

  17. Digger Says:

Welcome to spam-ban on Digg. I’ll make sure of it.

  18. Dan Says:

Your an idiot. An idiot with an idea that I hope to see work, but an idiot nonetheless. By posting your “plan” and having the users who are signing on to it, you have shot yourself in the foot. The commies and libs are already all over you. As a conservative I want to see more balance on social sites and more exposure for conservative points of view, but these kind of approaches aren’t going to work unless you execute them a lil’ bit with more intelligence.

  20. Brandon Henak Says:

I never said “digg all conservative stories” or “go on every day and click only things from your conservative friends”. I just highlighted how digg works and how to find other conservatives in the most democratic, digg-esque of ways. Person to person. If liberals can’t understand the difference between informative instructions and “gaming the system” it just further demonstrates their ineptness in the political, or any other, realm.

  21. Doug Owens Says:

    Brandon,

Enjoy the digg process. It will be interesting to see how all parties use technology. As I was looking at your blog I couldn’t help laughing at one of your affiliated blogs, “Redneck Mafia”. Wow, that is a bit of a contradiction.

Yours truly and a fine liberal,

What a loser ! As if the tripe that comes out of the conservative lie machines is useful. Useful for making the sheep poop on the lawn, maybe.

You freaks are helping create the new police state that has become the US of A, and in the process helping with the international perception that America is the laughing stock of the world.

It’s gonna get far worse here in the states before it gets better. Wait until you go to the ATM and find out your accounts have been frozen for ‘money laundering’ and you find yourself in jail accused of ‘terrorism’ with no money to defend yourself, not way of finding out what crime you have been charged with and no way to communicate with the outside world.

Then tell me about how ‘the patriot act’ has protected your freedom.

Can you say ‘Secret Laws’ ?

Wake up before it’s too late !

  23. Danno, a Junkyard Dog Says:

Most Diggers seem to be fascists who refuse to even consider the conservative view point. Whether they like it or not, they need to be informed if they want to honestly partake in any political debate. These efforts give them the chance to be honest.

    DannoJyd is there to stay.

“Bravo, don’t let the mind numbed liberals get you down.”

Hey, Brandon, is it too much to expect you to set this guy straight? After all, a certain “mind-numbed liberal” cousin of yours was a National Merit Finalist.

Being a liberal doesn’t automatically make one stupid any more than being a Christian does. The same holds true for conservativism. Are there stupid liberals? Hell yes. Are there stupid conservatives? Hell yes. Are there extremely intelligent members of both parties? Of course.

  29. 5N00PY Says:

Good post, Brandon. I’ve added you to my friends list on Digg, and look forward to reading more of your blog posts. Any one that can get this many loony leftists riled up has my respect! :-)

  30. beth Says:

Good post. It seems that anything I submit to Digg is buried as soon as I post it. I know whoever diggs it down doesn’t even have time to read it. All that says to me is that they aren’t about discussion or being open to varying opinions. It’s just about being censored if you don’t agree with the progressive point of view.

  31. Kat, Brandon's cousin Says:

Chuck, when ignorant or malicious people purport to speak for liberals, I don’t stand for it. They don’t speak for me, and I’m not about to silently condone their words by letting them pass unchallenged. I expect the same level of integrity from my opponents.

If I called all conservatives “mind-numbed” or even “crazies” (like Adam), I have no doubt the bloggers here would leap for my jugular, and no wonder. However, if a conservative makes the same accusations against “the opposition”…radio silence, amounting to tacit agreement. Both sides, liberal and conservative alike, engage in such hypocrisy. They stand for their party rather than for ethics. I find that to be disgusting.

I don’t know the other bloggers here personally, but I know Brandon, and although we disagree on many issues, I have the utmost respect for his integrity. That’s why I find it very odd indeed that there has been no response from him on any occasion that such comments have been made against liberals…very odd.

  32. Brandon Henak Says:

    Kat,

It goes without saying that hyperbole on either side is uncalled for. It can be observed pretty frequently on this site in the comments section. This does not mean I condone it but, commenters can speak for themselves. I would like to think that any reader can discern the wheat from the chaff if you will.

    Thank you for your readership,
    Brandon

I’ve bookmarked a number coordinated neofascist hate spammers and bury their articles every day.

I haven’t buried a single littlegreenfootballs article yet. Because I haven’t noticed any coordinated spamming, nor do they seem to devote themselves to unfounded lies and hatred. I respect free speech.

But if someone walked around town painting swastikas on public buildings, I’d want to wash them off. And if someone followed me around shouting curses at me, I’d make them go away. If you consistently choose spam and one sided hate speech over intelligent conversation, then you have nothing to say that anyone wants to hear.
