YouTube Campaign Craze Hits Marquette

We have all seen how the YouTube campaign video trend can both make and break a campaign. The “macaca” incident with George Allen, whether fair or not, destroyed Fmr. Senator Allen’s presidential hopes. Conversely, Obama has made positive waves by announcing his campaign via web video.

Sara Stellpflug and Dan Guenther have taken this approach to the college campus level with a series of YouTube videos. This first attempt, a quick introductory clip is a start. I would hope that each candidate can put something like this together and I have encouraged their campaign to spice it up a bit with more issue oriented cuts at relevant locations across campus. I understand that at this stage of the game this is about just getting name recognition on campus but, hopefully we’ll see the candidates define themselves by what they are going to do and then execute on that image. Unfortunately, this has alway been a challenge for the Marquette University Student Government (MUSG). I will do my best to remain optimistic.

I am not going to be optimistic about it at all. At least we will now have video of the candidates lying and making broken promises to the student body. Not voting in this election will be the best thing any student can do for MUSG and students that might join MUSG in the future. If student participation gets so low in these stupid elections maybe the Administration will get rid of MUSG and give the students back their activity fee. Plus no MUSG will mean more activity space in the AMU.

Dan and I decided to use a popular medium of video on YouTube for a campaign device that would help students get to know more about us and also to help them understand more about our issues. We recognize the importance of direct communication with students and this is one way we are able to do that. It is our hope that the videos will allow students to get to know us on a more personal level and also feel more comfortable approaching us with concerns.

In the near future, we will release more videos that talk directly about our plan for certain platform issues.

Sara and Dan are the only candidates who have unveiled a plan that actually speaks to our needs. They are real students with a real understanding of the needed changes. MUSG needs Sara and Dan!

  4. Alan Says:

Sara and Dan haven’t talked about a thing. They are saying all these big key words like “transparency” and hitting on issues, without ever setting out an actual plan. Meanwhile, Brock and Sara have a detailed objectives and mission and will hit the ground running. They are the team that is most qualified and most prepared to make sure that Marquette is a better place.

Although almost all of the groups have good ideas, Brock and Sara are too far removed from average students to be able to adequately represent us or hear or voices. Sara and Dan represent the best chance to move our student body forward representing both people who are in organizations and regular students.

  7. Dan Says:

That Georgetown clip was fantastic! It’s too bad none of the MUSG-types on this campus have anywhere near the creativity and personality needed to pull something like that off. Someone has to tell these campaigns that they sound exactly like the campaigns that came before them, and people are disinterested. The video in this post was a good idea, but was about as exciting as unbuttered toast.

Until someone takes some risks and doesn’t sound like every other campaign, I can sum my thoughts up in one word….

    Yawn.

I might just go ahead and agree with 15th, though I really do love buzz words with no backing

  9. Chuck Says:

There is not enough synergy in this year’s election.

  10. James Says:

Brian, you think Brock and Sara out of touch? Perhaps someone should ask Sara Stellpflug why she voted against the gold recommendation that urged the administration to reverse its decision. Students were rallying in the streets against the administration’s decision and yet she voted with the administration!

The You Tube video was great. Dan is exactly right with his comments about how our current candidates lack the creativity and personality needed to pull something like that off. But they also lack the “balls” to do something like that too. If the candidates from G-town did that at MU, i would for sure vote for them, because what they did was clever and their basketball team will lose to MU in the Big East Tournament, so I feel sorry for them.

I was just searching the candidates’ websites and Sara & Dan have a new video. It’s actually pretty cool. It talks all about what MU students are saying about them. Check it out.

Sara & Dan have released another new video titled “Sara & Dan - Students Like You.” It is by far their best video yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVs2×42FEMY
