A Quirk in Liberal Thinking

On an earlier post regarding Dr. Maguire (and I have two additional posts in the hopper of my mind on that subject, which I will hopefully post this evening), I said, “If we wanted to make sure that Marquette never saw an admissions application from a student from a conservative orthodox Catholic family, I think we’ve found it.”

My point was that the story about Dr. Maguire is getting published nationally, and especially in many Catholic news outlets (you can see the list) and diocesan newspapers. The people who read those news sources tend to be conservatives, and thus the parents among them will strike Marquette from the list of potential schools after reading of the dissenter on faculty.

The line back from liberals is that “conservatives don’t care about whether they have conservative professors.” They choose to come here anyway.

That kind of logic strikes me as odd coming from liberals. Because when I listen to liberals talk about racial diversity, they all say (and Marquette has adopted this argument hook, line, and sinker) “We need people of color as faculty to make the students of color feel comfortable here.”

Why should we not need more conservatives on faculty to make the conservatives in our student body more comfortable and at home?

Comparing race to a political view point makes you look stupid.

I don’t really think so, they are both minority groups at Marquette. People of color are a minority on campus, so are conservatives, yet Marquette wants to stamp out and discourage one minority and foster the other. Why? Because blacks are a politically correct victim group while college conservatives are not (and the administration/faculty tend to be liberal).

One would think that “orthodoxy” would be the premium virtue in a Theo prof.

I wonder why it’s such a big deal that there’s all this writing about Dr. Maguire. For those who don’t like him, at least is a warning not to take his class right, instead of assuming you’re going into a class with a professor who shares the exact same views that you do.

But also, since none of you have probably taken a class with Dr. Maguire, he does tell what official Catholic Church teaching is. He also tells why he does not agree with that teaching, and then offers his students the ability to discuss their own opinions. There was a conservative in my class when I took it who disagreed with everything that Dr. Maguire stood for, but yet loved the class because if was a good forum for INTELLIGENT debate, not one-sided name calling that you find many other places.

And also, in my three years on campus, it seems that I have come into contact so much more with conservative students and professors than I have with liberal ones, so I wouldn’t necessarily say that conservatives are a minority.
