Go for the Mandate

Anyone want to bet on whether or not Fr. Simon Harak, the newest lecturer in the Department of Theology, has or will pursue a mandate to teach theology from Archbishop Dolan? We would certainly encourage him to do so, even if certain of his colleagues won’t.

Canon Law 812: “It is necessary that those who teach theological disciplines in any institute of higher studies have a mandate from the competent ecclesiastical authority.”

Ex Corde Ecclesiae: “In ways appropriate to the different academic disciplines, all Catholic teachers are to be faithful to, and all other teachers are to respect, Catholic doctrine and morals in their research and teaching. In particular, Catholic theologians, aware that they fulfil a mandate received from the Church, are to be faithful to the Magisterium of the Church as the authentic interpreter of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.”

USCCB Application of Ex Corde:
“A request for a mandatum by a professor of a Catholic theological discipline should be in writing and should include a declaration that the teacher will teach in full communion with the Church.”

I’m always amazed by the attention paid to Maguire, and now Harak, on this website. I’ve listened to John Dean a few times, read a bit of his stuff online about the authoritarian strand in modern-day conservatism, and I guess that’s my conclusion as to why you two white males (Brian and Dan) are so concerned with the maintenence of a strict heirarchy exclusive of women, and to a large degree, non-white peoples. Please correct me if I’m wrong, chaps.

And Dan, considering you are not Catholic, what precisely is your motivation in monitoring the goings-on in the Catholic body politic so intently? Not just monitoring, but attempting to influence, I suppose. Is it some sort of overarching Christian bent towards orthodoxy? I’d love if you could clear this up.

This from a white male. Thanks for your enlightening comments.

You’re missing the point man. I’m just curious as to where you guys are coming from. I’m not Catholic, and personally don’t give a hoot nor a holler what Dan Maguire teaches here. His criticism of the church heirarchy is intriguing to me (I’m referring to his comments in the Trib here, that Catholic theology is dictated by a small group of men with only token female voices), and it seems that you two are essentially indicted in this criticism, meaning you are personally invested in the perpetuation of the status quo in Catholicism because it benefits you directly. (Of course, I’m assuming you are Catholic, Brian. I don’t know for sure. Dan is the anomaly - hence, my second question.) However, your personal inclination towards the status quo doesn’t justify it, so what does? The desire to hold on to power was what I was saying earlier.

I’m wrong, right? Tell me why then, real simple-like, because us secularists need to be walked through these matters slowly.

in a nutshell Greg, and this is no conspiracy theory, Dr Maguire is subversive because he is well aware of the history of the Catholic Church’s positions and its evolution on them to today. More than that, unlike the vast majority of the Catholic layity, he reads every single Catholic document on teaching, thought, theology, anything and also unlike the vast majority of the Catholic Layity (especially since Pope John XXIII), has no problem being vocal on apparent or actual contradictions in what the Church is saying and what it actually does.

And the problem with gop3 and Dan Maguire, you shouldn’t even ask. If they have a problem with anything and anyone, it’s got nothing to do with right and wrong or facts, but simply because they disagree
