STEVENS POINT – The Wisconsin Federation of College Republicans held its annual state convention in Stevens Point on April 20th and 21st. With more than 100 delegates in attendance from 15 Wisconsin college campuses, this year’s convention was one of the largest in recent years.
The convention brings together the College Republicans chapters from across the state to debate and pass resolutions, honor individuals and chapters who dedicated this past year to the Republicans and the Republican movement on campus, and most importantly, elect officers for the coming year.
After a heated race for the state chairmanship, convention delegates elected former Republican Party of Oneida County Chairman and UW-Stevens Point junior, Ryan Wrasse to the job.
“We’ve laid out an ambitious plan for the next year and beyond, but I have no doubt that we’ll be able to reach our goals and help prepare the next generation of conservative leaders,†Wrasse said.
“The College Republicans have entered a new phase in grassroots activism here in Wisconsin. With the 2008 presidential elections coming up fast, it will be essential that the Wisconsin College Republicans are prepared for the challenges and opportunities that we are bound to face in the coming months – I’m humbled and honored to be a part of those preparations,†Wrasse said of his election.
Delegates also elected First Vice Chair Mike Hahn, a senior at UW-Madison; Second Vice Chair Emily Pedley, a sophomore at UW-Platteville; Treasurer Brandon Goetzman, a junior at UW-Madison; Secretary Jackie Goessl, a junior at UW-Madison.

The numbers at the convention prove the strength of the CRs in the state. Even though the organization has been through some rough times, there is plenty to be optimistic about. As an alumni, I couldn’t be more optimistic about the future than now.
Just thought I’d also give a shout out to the Eau Claire CRs… they also made the news today with their Silly String Support Our Troops Event. What a great event!!

If the CRs are going so strong, how come the average age in most county parties is 60 years old? Do they lose interest or leave the state?

First off, I’ll admit that many county party chapters do a bad job of connecting to local CR chapters, and many CR chapters do a bad job connecting to local county parties. There are many exceptions: Marquette and the Milw. GOP have a strong relationship, I would say. Concordia was usually connected to Ozaukee. I’m not extensively familiar with other areas, but I believe that the 3rd and 7th Congressional District parties are well-connected to local CRs. Remember too the frank reality that there are only 18 or so active CR chapters, and many of those are concentrated in the same counties. So many county parties will never see a CR.
Second, if county parties are limited in activity to an annual caucus and Lincoln Day Dinner, don’t be surprised if CRs don’t show up in droves. CRs are more likely to attend grassroots events than dinner banquets in my experience.

MILWGOP, are you referring to the Milwaukee area or other areas of the state? In Dunn County (one of the top counties in the state) in the “West” we were involved in many things. We could not however attend the meetings because it was against some campaign finance rules and they didn’t want to take any chances. However we kept good communication and coordinated several events and get out the vote efforts.
No one understands the importance of CRs more than the Republicans in the 3rd District– namely Pierce County, Dunn County, Grant County, and Eau Claire County. The county parties there reach out to us and make sure we got the support we needed to work college campuses. In 2004, we nearly won a majority of students for Republicans at UW-Stout for President Bush and Andy Lamb.

I’m not necessarily talking about whether or not CRs become involved in their county parties, maybe I wasn’t clear. My point is, while there may be a few CRs involved in county parties (my experience is limited to Milwaukee & Dane), where do they go after graduation. Between the CRs and the 50-60 year olds, where is everyone else? Working I suppose.

What ever happened to the Republican Young Professionals? We need a better transitional group.
