McCain focusing on Fmr Senator Fred Thompson’s 2000 Endorsement

As Former Senator and possible Presidential candidate Fred Thompson continues to build momentum towards a 2008 presidential campaign, other candidates are beginning to take note, and prepare. Thompson’s sterling conservative record is hard to dispute so, it seems that his primary opponents are already looking to temper and dilute his record through affiliation.
A friend of mine in DC recently notified me of increased focus from the McCain campaign on Fred Thompson’s 2000 endorsement of John McCain. I pulled these articles out of the archives to look into it: WaPo, quote from CNN.
“When it comes to personal courage and integrity and the courage to do what he thinks is right, regardless of whether or not it’s particularly popular at the moment, John McCain has shown characteristics of leadership like no one else I’ve ever seen,” Thompson said at a press conference.
I would not be surprised to see a video of this pop up on YouTube, especially after McCain’s suspected airing of Guiliani’s pro-abortion video shortly after McCain’s campaign began to similarly look into Guiliani’s past.
This new focus definitely points even more significantly to a run from Thompson. After all, Thompson and McCain are long time friends, if anyone knows whether Thompson will run or not, McCain does. Which is probably the reason he is preparing with increased research and requests, including Thompson’s 2000 endorsement.
Considering this endorsement or McCain’s relationship with Thompson as a crack in Thompson’s conservative record would be ludicrous. Thompson helped out McCain 8 years ago when they served in the Senate and worked on the same bill. McCain has made many mistakes since then, opposing the Bush tax cuts and pandering to the liberals being two of the chief transgressions. Let’s hope that Thompson has observed and learned from these mistakes in order to serve our country better. A petty video posting on YouTube of Thompson complimenting his friend should not sway Thompson’s base in the least.

And it WON’T….we’ve already seen evidence of Thompson reevaluating his stance on McCain-Feingold. Yes, he’s friends with McCain, so what? That does not in any way detract from the ideals and principles that make the entire man and leader that Senator Thompson is.
I support FDT, and will because I have researched the issues, good AND bad and have evaluated Senator Thompson to be the best leader our nation could possibly have at this moment in time.

Re your article on FDT’s endorsement:
Nothing will dissuade me from supporting Fred Dalton Thompson
as the next president of the United States of America.
Each time he is interviewed, I am even more persuaded that
he is the man for our times. He is practical, level headed, and
adequately prepared to debate any candidate at any time on any issue; he knows what he believes and has the courage to stand and be counted for what he believes. He is the genuine article and there is no disputing
his Reaganesque charisma and presidential persona. As others on
this bandwagon continue to proclaim: He is electable! He will carry
the South and that means he will carry the nation.
Women adore him. Men admire him. He is walking tall
and he carries the big stick of communication skills, reaching across
Party lines, as Reagan did, to get things done and done “right.”
McCain, after last night’s debate, left me cold. He is not electable.
He is not charismatic. Like Clinton, he wants the job too badly
and it shows, much to his disadvantage. I think he should have a role
on the Cabinet when Thompson takes office, but he should not be
on the Republican ticket as president or vice president. The top spot
belongs to no one other than Fred Dalton Thompson if the GOP fully
intends to win this election.

Um, Sarah Sawyer, Fred Thompson was not in Walking Tall, thats a common mistake apparently. It was Joe Don Baker.
