The Politico has the scoop, Former Senator Fred Thompson is entering the 2008 Presidential race on the most patriotic day of the year!

Fred Dalton Thompson is planning to enter the presidential race over the Fourth of July holiday, announcing that week that he has already raised several million dollars and is being backed by insiders from the past three Republican administrations, Thompson advisers told The Politico.

So he has made his decision and ramping up his campaign. He has the donors and will be able to raise money but, his main strength, the force that has been driving him to enter the race, is the grassroots of the party. When will they be brought into the circle? How does he plan on harnessing the conservatives who are pushing his internet presence? It appears he has his inner circle for fundraising organized:

Thompson dropped all pretenses on Tuesday afternoon during a conference call with more than 100 potential donors, each of whom was urged to raise about $50,000…The supporters on Tuesday’s call make up a group the campaign is calling “First Day Founders.” When launched, the campaign will have offices in Nashville and Northern Virginia, the advisers say.

iFred? FreedomNet? ThompsonTube? He has repeatedly used blogs, and even internet video in an edgy fashion no other candidate has been able to duplicate. He needs to brand it and continue to use it as a sustainable competitive advantage. In his own words:

By empowering individuals and building communities, the Internet provides a way of going around the inside-the-beltway crowd to reach people in numbers unheard of not that long ago.

I believe this direct communication and discussion is going to have an enormous impact on our political process.

We’re all fired up for Fred but, this late entry won’t be easy. He will have to turn is internet “drafters” into a sustainable advantage, make a monumental push with party faithful to jump start his finances and most importantly, continue to be the straight talking Fred Thompson so many of us are already supporting!

    sustainable competitive advantage

    Nice.

  2. Chuck Says:

“If he runs, Thompson will be the most pro-Bush Republican in the race; he narrated Bush’s bio films at the 2004 Republican convention. If you liked the Bush era but wished the president’s voice had a little more bass, Thompson’s the one.”

The magazine describes Thompson as a mixture of “tough guy thuggishness” with a “bomb the bastards” foreign policy approach. –REASON magazine

Can a candidate so close to Bush resonate well in the general election? Do voters want to continue our current foreign policy?

I am admittedly unfamiliar with Fred Thompson but I worry about his small government bona fides.

He’s going to lose to Gov. Tommy Thompson anyway.

  4. Brian Gregory Says:

Does anyone have any information on where or how I could volunteer for the Thompson campaign? Thank you.

And to the guy who said Tommy Thompson will win? Haha. Good one.

So it begins… but July 4th? Thats only a month away from the Iowa Straw Poll.

  6. Josh Says:

I for one say hurrah! to finally having a true Bush-believer in the race. We need someone to continue the Bush record of competent government, logical thinking, and etc.

I’m from TN, and the local talk-show hosts are falling over themselves waiting to kiss Fred’s feet, or other not-so-desirable-part.

He reminds me too much of Lyndon Johnson, and that’s certainly not the kind of president America needs.

BTW, Josh: you’re in the vast minority.

  8. SPET3R Says:

I agree with you George C… Fred Thompson is just hype right now. When he appears in a debate, we’ll see how he does against the other candidates.

  9. Brandon Henak Says:

One of America’s busiest guys these days is Mark Corallo  of Corallo Comstock Inc. in Alexandria. He’s the media strategist and former Justice Department public affairs director who is the public voice of Fred Thompson’s prospective presidential campaign. A few hours after The Politico reported on Wednesday morning that the actor and former senator was moving swiftly toward declaring his candidacy, Corallo e-mailed: “The response is unreal. Total explosion. Can’t keep up with the incoming. Received over 300 e-mails from people who want to contribute and/or volunteer. Drinking from the fire hose.”

  11. Josh Says:

Just something I found interesting. Barack Obama’s candidacy has been criticized because of his lack of governmental experience. He spent about 8 years as an Illinois state senator and will, by ‘08, have spent almost 4 years in the U.S. Senate.

What about Fred Thompson? He doesn’t get the “lack of experience” criticism, but he was in the Senate for only about 8 years - he filled the last 2 years of Gore’s term, and then had one full term of his own. Other than this, he’s never been elected to anything. He was an assistant US Attorney for 3 years and served about a year as an attorney for a Congressional committee investigating Watergate.
