We have blogged before about the “gnats” buzzing around war horse Fred Thompson‘s head in the form of researchers from other campaigns, today however, I found another form of early Fred Thompson bashing, this time by what appears to be a young conservative (what a coincidence, just like me!). I usually only check my messages on the Facebook every few days because it is mostly mass messages from the different groups I am part of. Today, I came across one from Athena De Frank sent at 2:50 am on June 16th titled just “Fred Thompson 08″ (she must have seen my support of Fred Thompson through the Facebook Election ’08 application or other groups), I will respond to a few of the claims and then include the full message below the jump.
Here is the first paragraph detailing Fred’s supposed lack of focus on the War on Terror:
During an April 15th Interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN Thompson was asked “Why are we losing the War” I believe the response any Republican should give is to deny the assertion we are losing by mentioning the high success of the recent troop surge. I was shocked to hear Thompson’s response when he said, “Abortion, if we hadn’t killed so many babies we would be winning that war”. I am Pro-Life but I am shocked that he just dosen’t even seem to care about the war only abortion.
Sounds profound, if somewhat unfocused but, it could be argued he is reaching out to the pro-life crowd in an obvious way in his statement. The problem? I cannot find any instance of the “April 15th” interview, the only one I can find is this November 10th, 2002 Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer that is discussing Saddam Hussein and general Iraq issues.
Her next claim is one about Fred Thompson appearing to minimize 9/11 by comparing it to abortion deaths:
The second comment made by Thompson that really bothered me happened on May 22nd during an NPR interview conducted following a Rasmussen Poll. Fred Thompson told the NPR corespondent “I think we just care too much about September 11th when we lost 3,000 lives compared to the millions of babies murdered”. Once again I am Pro-Life but Thompson just does not seem to care about fighting the War on Terror only abortion. Since these comments his campaign managers have made him change his approach by say different things, but what bothers me is these new statements of Thompson’s are his speech writers not his. The change have caused his numbers to climb.
This would be something to consider, Thompson did have favorable poll results on May 22nd, except I can find no evidence that the interview, let alone the quote, ever happened. There is no NPR links for an interview with Fred Thompson on May 22nd, here is the query.
If anyone can help me find these references, please let me know however, I can only assume that she is slamming a candidate with false information. After proving herself untrustworthy or misled, I can only wonder, how many others have received this note? Is there a campaign behind this, or a 501c3? Guiliani or possibly Romney? “Athena” definitely promotes him at the end of the note:
Right now I believe that Rudy Giuliani and maybe Mitt Romney are the best for the Job. Fred Thompson and John McCain just don’t seem to have enough focus on these issues.
It is not realistic to make any assumptions based just off the suggested candidates or, even to think this is widespread but, if you have received anything similar, please let us know, this is an interesting phenomenon.
Update: Melissa, a friend of Gop3.com, has pointed out that the Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer is only on Sundays and therefore the only time it would fall on April 15th is 2007 (she sent the transcripts, he was not on the show) and 2001. The War on Terror was not in full swing in 2001 and this was before 9/11 so Fred Thompson could not talk about 9/11.

Report Message
Hey Brandon I saw that you support Fred ThompsonJust like Fred Thompson I am Pro-Life but I really worry that Thompson just doesn’t have his “Eye on the Ball” in the War on Terror. I have really began to worry that Thompson is so focused on being Pro-Life he has lost sight of other issues and here is why
Ronald Reagan has been an inspiration to us all and Reagan would never support any piece of legislation that would hurt Republicans and help Democrats. What shocks me is Thompson voted with McCain on the McCain/Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill which hurt the Republicans ability to raise funds and gave a serious advantage to the Democrats. Why would Thompson do this? I just continue to gain the impression that he is only labeled a conservative because of his Pro-Life stance.
I don’t but I believe Fred Thompson believes that a Pro-Life stance is the only important issue in this election. I don’t doubt for one second that Fred Thompson supports America in the War on Terror. What I question is Thompson’s focus and desire to concentrate on fighting the War on Terror. Thompson’s Campaign Managers have made him change his approach to talking about abortion only when asked and to speak stronger in supporting America in the War on Terror. What bothers me is these words are his speech writers because we have already heard his.
With our borders being overrun by Illegal Aliens, Terrorists planning major attacks, the War desperately needing effective leadership and focus, not allowing the democrats to raise taxes, socialize medicine and so many other vital issues we need a candidate with an actual planned solution to deal with these problems. Right now I believe that Rudy Giuliani and maybe Mitt Romney are the best for the Job. Fred Thompson and John McCain just don’t seem to have enough focus on these issues.

Fred Thompson doesn’t have my vote yet – however these messages you are getting stem from pure ignorance.
They’re out of context.
Keep up the good fight.

Generally speaking, the Rudy crowd is much more animated in their quest to dis Fred than all the others put together.
That’s because Rudy has made the War his centerpiece.
Some people just like War.
dad, the Rudy crowd may be more animated, but not nearly as animated as the truthers in the Ron Paul crowd.
It’s Thompsons body of lobbyist efforts that would prevent me from voting for him.
He is just another long line of sleeze ball politicians.
conservative my arse.
Fred Thompson is a lazy politician who prefers acting. The mutt faced actor is banging a young hot wife cause he pretends on TV for a living…
Fooliani and ken doll Romney ain’t any better. Fooliani is a 911 opportunist who would rather profit off of 911 with his hot air speeches than sit in and learn about foreign policy as part of an Iraq panel he was on (Ron Paul was right, Ghouliani needs to read up on blowback, the blowhard). Romney is a flip flopping polygamy loving ken doll.
McCain has lost his edge and his mind, he’s toast..
Hopefully the Bush Supportin’ Sheeple can wake from their brainwashed trance and see that Ron Paul is the only true conservative and honest politician

Details Eric? Must we get into Barack’s or Hillary’s lobbyist connections? They have far more. Everyone has interests, some interests however, are morally indefensible (abortion), or run against our success as a country (big government socialism)
These are completely false. Can you seriously imagine any candidate (even Mike Gravel or Ron Paul) saying something that far out of mainstream thinking? Thompson has yet to be interviewed by Blitzer this year. All of his recent interviews can be accessed easily on the web. Keep up the support!
