For anyone who ever wondered why we say that the Marquette Tribune is just a liberal rag, pick up today’s edition of the paper.
Front page main story and picture, reported by 2 Trib staffers (i.e., not just a pull from the AP): ” ‘And he said “yes” ‘ ” – After an Iowa judge nixes the state’s Defense of Marriage Act, one same-sex couple ties the knot.” There is no Marquette connection other than a one paragraph quote from a theology professor.
Page three: “MU gives peace a chance – New center to encourage non-violence.” A report on the new Center for Peacemaking, directed by Rev. Simon Harak. No mention of all of the criticism the Center and Fr. Harak has received, mostly from this blog.
Page Four, Opinion: The staff editorial calls for a University mandate to force students to perform a certain number of hours of community service.
Page Seven (front page of General News), with a smiling happy piece of artwork, “Lesbian candidate in the mix for Chicago bishop job – If elected, will be second openly gay Episcopal bishop.” The badly-written story, again, written by a Trib staffer, quotes several of liberals, but no conservative. No mention that Lind’s election would probably prompt a worldwide schism of the Anglican Communion and directly violate a communique issued by the world’s Anglican bishops. The Rev. Debra Trakel of St. James, the church just east of Straz, is quoted as supporting the nomination. Rev. Trakel was last quoted in the Marquette Tribune saying her church should open a violent sex offender transitional living facility in its fellowship hall. Genius – violent sex offenders living right next door to a dorm full of vulnerable college kids.
Page Seven also, the final paragraphs of the story on Milwaukee’s poverty rate, from Prof. Jones and Ms. Brown.
And against all these we have the one nice story about the Bradley Foundation’s grant to the Institute for the Transformation of Learning, though the story entirely fails to mention the school choice angle that drives both Bradley and ITL.
So next time someone says the Tribune isn’t liberal, ask about today’s issue.

I fail to see how a University requirement to do community service is “liberal.” Making care packages for troops overseas, or helping counsel women who are contemplating abortion choose life arn’t exactly crazy lefty activities.
“Community service” does not automatically equate to leftist activities such as helping the poor, cleaning the city, or doing anything else that serves the interests of fellow human beings. You can claim that people ought to have a choice whether to do community service, but you also had a choice when it came to attending a university where “service” is one of the pillars of the institution.
People should have a choose whether or not to participate in community service. Your right RC that it is MU’s right to institute the policy and it is our right not to attend MU. However, I think Dan was hinting to it is MU’s duty as an institution of higher learning to protect its students rights by allowing them the choice of participating. Just like MU has the ultimate right to limit our free speech within its hallways (only within its property that is!) it should out of the sacredness of free speech and higher learning. I don’t Dan (Neither I) want to see MU turn into a socialist community that removes the charity and heart from community service by making it mandatory.
If this is what Amanda Scheiffer (sorry, sp?) considers journalism, we’re all in for one hell of a year.
Let me also bring to your attention Prof. McAdams’ excellent post on the two LGBT-related stories: http://mu-warrior.blogspot.com.....ne-ii.html
Yesssss! Starting in on the Trib early! Last year was so lame, you guys hardly did anything at all. Maybe because the editor and half the staff was conservative. But I’m still pissed you guys never do anything on Marquee! HELLO. Last year they had the word ‘dildo’ in a headline…but nothing from gop3 (if you didn’t know, only liberals use dildos). There was also a ton of sexual references without the context of marriage. And moustache rides. In conclusion, you guys suck.
Hopefully the Trib will start throwing “condom” parties and have sly sexual references printed on their sweatshirts like the good old days.
Brian, before you start complaining and naming names first know how to spell their name right, it could have taken two seconds to get the correct spelling and second the editor in chief doesn’t assign the stories, the desk editors do. To say it’s not journalism is a bunch of bull. It’s called newsworthiness and all the stories that Daniel mentioned are newsworthy.
And McAdams’ blog says that two stories “pushing an agenda” have no connection to Marquette, it’s called general news. It’s what’s out there in the world. It connects with some people one campus, that’s why it’s covered. He could just complain about placement, but it’s a big get for the Tribbers and it’s worthy of the front page over most of the other articles. And to call it an obsession with gay rights, frankly conservatives are just as obsessed with the same topic. Why else would he and you have so many blog entries to link back and forth to?
I agree with HL. Stories that make it to the Tribune are there for a reason… they matter to Marquette students. This is why there is 2 sections: the campus news and general news. General news covers everything outside of Marquette (such as the Iowa story and the Chicago lesbian bishop). The Tribune has a job to inform the Marquette community of not only MU news, but also news around the nation that affects the students in some way, shape or form.
Why does GOP3 and John McAdams condone the Tribune for reporting what’s happening around our country? What does it matter anyways if the stories lean towards liberal supporters? I’m sorry to inform you, but there ARE liberals on campus and liberals do read the Tribune.
I am a conservative and I may disagree with the stories (like I do), but I think the Tribune did an excellent job of informing me of what’s going on. I don’t always have time to check the news headlines. The Tribune enabled me to read such content right here on campus.
Doesn’t anyone else appreciate that?
If the Warrior is so concerned about too much Liberal coverage on campus, why don’t they publish as much as the Tribune (or at least once a week?) That’s what I don’t understand. GOP3 can point the fingers and complain til ears are ringing, yet they offer no solution and do nothing about it.
Do everyone a favor and quit your complaining. If you care so much, join the Trib staff and write conservative stories. They are hiring.
And Brian, how are the stories that have been posted “not Journalism?” Are you saying they aren’t newsworthy because they aren’t Conservative? Like I said earlier, not everyone on campus is a Conservative like me or you, but those stories are real and they are important to students, no matter what political background they support.
[...] The Marquette Tribune 2007-2008 staff has been publishing bi-weekly for just under a month now, and made some small waves a few weeks ago when it put out an issue with a blatantly pro-homosexual theme. [...]
