From Today’s Marquette University News Briefs:

Dr. Patrick Carey, professor and William J. Kelly, S.J., Chair in Catholic Theology, will chair Marquette’s Provost Search Committee. Other members of the committee will include: Dr. William Cullinan, dean of the College of Health Sciences; Richard J. Fotsch, member of the executive committee of the Board of Trustees and an executive with the Kohler Company; Darren Jackson, vice chair of the Board of Trustees and an executive with Best Buy; Joseph D. Kearney, dean of the Law School; Dr. Kristy Nielson, chair of the University Academic Senate and an associate professor of psychology; Dr. Sarah Peck, chair and associate professor of finance; Janice Simmons-Welburn, dean of libraries; and Julie Tolan, vice president for university advancement. Dr. Jeff Snell, special advisor to the president, will staff the committee.

Let’s see. Two college deans. Two trustees. Two senior administrators. Three professors, including the Academic Senate chair.

WHO IS MISSING FROM THIS COMMITTEE??? STUDENTS!

We are about to hire the #2 ranking person in the University, the Chief Academic Officer. As Fr. Wild said in the NewsBriefs item: “[T]his is a critical function for the university.” Yet there will be no student voice as the committee develops criteria and conducts interviews.
