Posing for Holy Pictures

The Hon. Steve Kagen, Member of Congress, is posing for holy pictures on immigration. He knows that in a district like Northeastern Wisconsin, the polling is pretty clear that holding the line on illegal immigration is a hot button issue.
So Kagen hopped on the bandwagon with Heath Shuler’s SAVE bill, which is supported by Tom Tancredo and the Immigration Reform Caucus.
But don’t be fooled! Steven Kagen is NOT the strong borders guy he’s trying to act like.
He voted to allow illegal immigrants to form unions in the United States. (House Roll Call 117)
He voted against full funding for the construction of the border fence as mandated by Congress. (House Roll Call 490)
He voted to make it easier for illegal immigrants to receive federal housing assistance, instead of ensuring that the funds go to the low-income Americans. (House Roll Call 628, 814 and 875)

Is John Gard nuts or just plain stupid?
His Gard for Congress website has this message.
I’ve taken the first steps towards gathering the resources I’ll need to run a winning campaign to represent the 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. I believe the people of Northeast Wisconsin deserve a congressman who will look out for the best interests of our hard-working families and fight for our Wisconsin values.
Steve Kagen and I have some very real differences on some of the most important issues facing our country.
Since his election to Congress, Steve Kagen voted for a budget that would pave the way for the largest tax increases in American history. I believe families are seeing too much of their paychecks taken up in taxes. I would have voted differently.
Steve Kagen voted to spend Social Security dollars on other government programs. I believe Social Security dollars should be spent on Social Security only. I would have voted differently.
Steve Kagen voted against fully funding the construction of a fence to guard our borders, and he voted to allow illegal immigrants to have access to federal housing assistance funds. I believe we should stop rewarding illegal behavior and start protecting our borders – immediately. I would have voted differently.
I think it is also telling that 75% of Steve Kagen’s campaign contributions are from Washington, D.C. special interest groups. It certainly shows where the bulk of Congressman Kagen’s support lies.
I’ll make a final decision later this year, but Cate and I are looking forward to traveling Northeast Wisconsin to talk about how we can build a better and brighter future for all of our families.
John Gard
Anyone who has watched a news program in the last month, knows that the Congress has not passed a budget yet, in fact only one appropriations bill did not get a Bush veto.
Rep. Kagen could not have voted on a budget, as we still have none, as of 11/18/07.
Social Security funds support many things, like child vaccines, flu shots…maybe this is what Gard is implying? Bush actually borrowed from Social Security to pay for the Iraq War….which we all know, Gard would have supported in a heartbeat.
Of course, Gard has to jump on a hot button issue. Illegal immigration. Claiming that Kagen voted to give federal housing dollars to them, and not funding the border fence.
That’s even stranger, as checking the actual House vote, he and other foolish GOP bloggers, like GOP3, college Republican group.
They list the actual Roll call vote.
“…He voted to allow illegal immigrants to form unions in the United States. (House Roll Call 117)
FINAL VOTE RESULTS FOR ROLL CALL 117
H R 800 RECORDED VOTE 1-Mar-2007 3:48 PM
QUESTION: On Motion to Recommit with Instructions
BILL TITLE: The Employee Free Choice Act
THIS WAS A MOTION TO RECOMMIT, not passage of the bill!
This bill passed with 13 Republicans joining the Democrats.
He voted against full funding for the construction of the border fence as mandated by Congress. (House Roll Call 490).
FINAL VOTE RESULTS FOR ROLL CALL 490
(Democrats in roman; Republicans in italic; Independents underlined)
H R 2638 YEA-AND-NAY 15-Jun-2007 11:38 AM
QUESTION: On Motion to Recommit with Instructions
BILL TITLE: Department of Homeland Security Appropriations for FY 2008
ANOTHER MOTION TO RECOMMIT.
This bill was passed with 45 Republicans supporting it. That’s well over 20% of the entire Republican House membership!
He voted to make it easier for illegal immigrants to receive federal housing assistance, instead of ensuring that the funds go to the low-income Americans. (House Roll Call 628, 814 and 875)”
628 ( Section 8 Housing Voucher) was another MOTION TO RECOMMIT
The actual bill which passed, has this very important clause,
“…Sec. 21) Prohibits rental housing assistance on behalf of any individual or household unless the individuals or adult household members provide valid personal identification in the form of either: (1) a Social Security card with photo identification or REAL ID Act identification; (2) a passport; or (3) a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services identification card.”
All three forms of ID, are federally validated by Section 8 Housing through Homeland Security, so claiming this should be brought to Gard’s attention.
Gard certainly doesn’t want to be called a liar!
814 is another MOTION TO RECOMMIT, and not a passage vote.
The passage of this bill won 237-18, with 165 Republicans simply refusing to vote.
A bill is up for passage and they refuse to vote against it? Very bizarre!
875 is, another MOTION TO RECOMMIT, not a passage..But this bill passed with 123 Republicans approving and only 72 voting against. A 348-72 passage.
The best part of John Gard’s bizarre claim is that Kagen gets 75% of his campaign money from Washington DC Special interest groups.
That’s just a blatant lie, coming from someone who first went to Washington to fundraise $60,000 from Challengers Helping Obtain the Majority Program (CHOMP).
CHOMP was founded last cycle by Reps. Pete Sessions (Texas) and Mike Rogers (Mich.) as a spin-off of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s (Texas) Retain Our Majority Program (ROMP).
This group supported Gard the last time, but his campaign finances, as well as Kagen’s are public record…easily searched online.
So who actually took outside money, Mr Gard?
Open Secrets is a campaign funding watchdog group.
http://www.opensecrets.org/races/summary.asp?ID=WI08&Cycle=2006
In 2006,
Kagen raised 79% of his funds from his own pocket!
Only 11% from PAcs, special interests and other organizations.
Gard, on the other hand, raised 45% of his money from those evil groups.
Some $76,000 of Gard’s 2006 was not properly filed with the FEC, and is of unknown origin, incomplete disclosure or no disclosure at all. There are no records of Gard’s personal income for that, or the current 2008 election period.
In all campaign contributions there is funds called CODED and UNCODED.
Coded are legally filed, verifiable moines coming from legitimate registered sources.
Uncoded, is well…untraceable money.
Kagen has 88% coded and only 12% uncoded.
Gard has 65% coded and 35% uncoded.
35% of his money, so far is from unknown sources.
Seems like Rep. Kagen is playing politics fairly, and responsibly….Mr. Gard seems to like the Jack Abramoff, style of money laundering.
