1. Statistical Tie for 2nd in the South Carolina Polls

From the latest Rasmussen poll in South Carolina where Fred is in a statistical tie for 2nd place:

Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolina’s Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.

2. Fundraising Goals Surpassed Three Times in a Row
The Friends of Fred (all 13,000+ and counting new ones) have been donating in record numbers, crushing every goal the campaign sets for them:

UPDATE II: We crossed the $1 million mark. We started filling the red truck Friday, January 4. So give or take a few hours we’ve averaged $100,000/day. We set three goals, and you met every one. With your gifts you have given Fred the resources he needs to convey is conservative message. Be proud of your accomplishment.

3. Website Traffic Velocity
Here is a graph (click to enlarge) of the amount of attention each GOP Candidates’ website is getting. Notice Fred08.com is number two. Rudy, Romney and Huckabee have all peaked. This directly translates into donations and new voters.

4. McCain is being booed by conservatives in Michigan (twice) and Fred just started his new ad buy in South Carolina

I can’t fathom booing any candiate, or anyone making a speech, heck I didn’t even boo gloria steniem when she came to eau clarie and at times she deserved it!

This booing of McCain is just shameful, esp. considering the sacrifices he has made for his country, and for what is he jeered? Because he realized that deporting 12 million people overnight is unpractical and he shows a grain of compassion for the people who are here (even if they are illegal?) At the very least, can’t your pragmatic side see that the GOP is on the verge of permantly alienating the Latino voter bloc? A bloc that by the way would probably like Huckabee’s mix of populist economics and social conservatism and/or McCain’s humane immigration policy? I think all the good work the Bush’s have done to bring large numbers of hispanic voters into the GOP tent is being completly squandered in this election cycle.

What a paradox it is, a nation with declining birthrates eager to slam the door on a young and eager work-force. Do these anti-immigration types really want America to become the world’s largest retirment home? Frankly I don’t see how things like social security, and our economic might, are going to survive a demagraphic winter.

I don’t see how McCain being boo’ed is anymore a sign of a Fred Thompson surge, then Huckabee saying Fred needs some metamucil is a sign of a Huckabee surge (though he sure will capture the “sense of humor” vote).

I realize I have been something of a lurking doubting Thomas on this blog lately, but I am really curious to see the reaction here when the following three things happen…

1-Thompson drops out (99% sure this will hapen)
2-Thompson endorses McCain (80% sure of this)
3-McCain makes Huckabee his running mate (51% sure of this)

Frankly I’ll be toasting all three events with brandy, I just hope you all have some prozac, youtube videos of Reegan (because apparently times never change), and a good nose-plug (for when you mark your ballot for McCain) on hand!

Ok that last part was hyperbole!

Oh and your anti-GOP Establishment comment for the day, once again courtesy of a popular Catholic blog…

“We’re not going to follow your lead anymore. We’ve followed you for over 40 years, and where has it gotten us? Roe v. Wade is still the law of the land, Gay-Marriage is becoming the law of the land, and now they’re telling us we can’t even say “Merry Christmas” anymore. Then, after all that you give us Rudy Giuliani (a pro-abortion social-liberal) and Mit Romney (a flip-flopper on abortion)!?! Well no more! We reject your candidates! Now you will follow our lead for a change!”

  2. Oink Says:

John McCain is a war hero. No doubt about that. But he’s not a good conservative. No doubt about that. His name was on the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill!!!! How much more clear can it get? McCain is not called “Maverick” because he’s a die-hard conservative. No doubt about that!

There are 12 million people here illegally. They’re criminals just by being here. No, we can’t round up 12 million people on train cars and run them home, but you know what? We can tell them to GET OUT. You have “x” number of weeks to GET OUT or face penalty of our laws. Many will leave. They got here and they can get home. They can start their own transit enterprise.

There are laws already on our books regarding citizenship. There’s currently a path for citizenship and these people broke the law. I don’t give a rat’s butt that they have to hide from police cars and live in the shadows! I don’t care and there are many more just like me. I am not a racist person. But this country has laws and I expect all people to obey them. WE have the say on who comes in and who doesn’t. Mexicans do not have that say nor does their government.

Whatever happed to compassion for those middle class Americans who are being displaced in the work force by illegal immigrants. First of all - what is it about illegal that people just don’t seem to comprehend! The borders need to be sealed, illegals given 90 days to apply for citizenship, or be deported. Fred Thompson is the only candidate who is a true conservative and statesman. Don’t be so sure that he won’t win - Americans are becoming very weary of the “dog and pony” show from most of the candidates, most of whom speak loudly with pretty words, but actually say nothing. Go to Fred.08 and judge for youself.

  5. Luke Says:

If Fred Thompson is surging I have no idea what the verb for McCain’s campaign would be.

This is an excellent analysis of the race. I hope you already emailed a link to members of the MSM.

As for Senator McCain, he made a tremendous sacrifice for this country and quite frankly, this country has rewarded for it him since he has been in congress since 1982. We are a nation of 300 million people, John McCain is not “entitle” to be President - we need to select the best candidate.

He deserves to get booed until he stops demagoguing the illegal immigration issue by constantly repeating that he isn’t going to call a solider in Iraq to tell him he is deporting his mother. Frankly, with up to 20 million illegals I wish everyone had a son in Iraq - now that would be a Surge.

  9. BJ Thomas Says:

The only “REAL” Conservative in the race is Fred Thomspson and McCain and company will be revealed this Saturday when the Pundit’s and Pollsters are confounded again by grassroots American’s winning this for Fred!!!

Dan sorry you will have to use another excuse to hit the Brandy!

  10. S Fisher Says:

Fred Thompson is the only conservative. Fred is surging. Fred just pulled in over 1 MILLION dollars in SMALL donations (between $10.00 & $25.00) since his last debate on Thursday.

People are fired up about Fred’s message, in spite of the pundits and media doing all it can to make him appear to be a flop. All of the media and pundits were wrong about the primary in Iowa…so I don’t pay any attention to what they say about Fred.

Fred has had overflowing crowds in South Carolina. At one venue it was packed and has been estimated there were approximated 500 to 600 people still outside.

  11. Richard Says:

McCain is a war hero..I agree! However, he has been running on that since 2000!!!! Give me a break. While I am grateful for his service to our country I can not and will not give way to his ideals on taxes and immigration. He whined his brains out over losing to Bush in 2000 nearly as much as Al Gore did in Florida and the courts!! I frankly dont give a hoot in hell about his service when it comes to knowing and believing he will stick to Conserative principles. He is a war hero…he is NOT a Conservative…He IS a RINO…Republican in name only!

  12. RTerry Says:

Fred is unabashedly the best choice for the Republican Party & the *only* one who can represent all of our constituents.

Always been Pro-Life, for the Religious Right
Excellent on Taxes, for the Fiscal Conservatives
He’s got the right stance on Immigration
He’s right on building a strong Military
He’s right on 2nd Amendment rights

The only thing Fred has against him is the Media. That should tell you all you need to know! If you want a Republican that can win the presidency, elect a candidate in the Primary whom all of us can back without sacrificing a single one of our values. I’m With Fred, and you should be too!

  13. Dave Says:

4%? Tell this part time joke of a candidate to take a hike already. Same with Guliani.

  15. Brandon Henak Says:

@Dave He wasn’t even campaigning in Michigan. Watch his rise in South Carolina. After that, people will realize he is the only true conservative the Fredmentum will really pick up.

  16. Dan Says:

The fact that McCain seems to be ruffling some feathers is probably a good sign for his chances in the general election. Winston Churchill said there two kinds of success, “initial, and ultimate,” 2006 was an initial success for the dems, I am afraid that unless the GOP runs McCain, 2008 willl be their ultimate sucess and finnish the job they started 2 years ago.

America is a center-right country, but it is not neccesarily a rank-and-file GOP country, independents and liberals will vote for McCain, thank God for it! I don’t see a lot of cross over votes comming for Gilliani despite his best efforts to be a social liberal. I really will not take any criticism of McCain or Huckabee seriously unless it is prefaced by saying that Rudy is a social liberal. There is some kind of McCain magic, let’s just run with it.

This illegal bashing is getting counterproductive. McCain has said he will secure the borders, what more can you want? Yes illegals have broken a law by comming into the country, but does breaking one law neccesarily make you a criminal?

Well maybe in the strictest sense it does, but this draconian approach seems tantamount to saying, if you’ll permit me to make up an analogy on the fly, “ANYONE WHO HAS EVER GONE OVER THE SPEED LIMIT IS AN ILLEGAL DRIVER, THEY SHOULD LOSE THEIR LICENSE. I DONT CARE IF THEY WERE RUSHING TO TAKE THEIR WIFE TO THE HOSPITAL, THEY BROKE THE LAWS, LETS DEVOUT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN RESOURCES TO TAKING ALL THESE NO GOOD LAW BREAKERS DOWN, THEY ARE JUST CROWDING UP THE ROADS FOR PERFECT DRIVERS LIKE ME.”

For the billionth time, illegal immigrants aren’t bad for the economy, if we are going off pure capitalism here (lest we be branded some sort of crazy Huckabee style populist God… I mean Reegan, forbid), I think the very fact that they are being hired simply means the market has spoken.

Personally I have never had any trouble getting a job washing dishes or as a janitor, I have worked these jobs. Since these are the sort of jobs illegal immigrants do as well, I don’t think they are displacing “middle class Americans” as somone said. Sorry, no one is going to cross the Rio Grande river in the dead of night and the next day become a high school history teacher or an insurance salesman. (Barbara)

As for Fred surging, honestly I could draw a “capicity” crowd in South Carolina. I think getting too small of a space for one’s even then yakking to the media about how people are packed in and in line at the door to see you is a political trick that was old hat by the time Andrew Jackson ran for office.

Maybe people are fired up about Fred’s message, but I don’t think Fred is. There really is no excuse for his not campaigning in the first few primaries. Huckabee has escaped being branded a regional candidate by winning and placing well in Northern States, it seems to me that Fred, camped out in SC with his TN drawl is playing a game of “identity politcs,” along the lines of, vote for me, I am a southerner, I drive a red pick up truck and I like guns.

Taking an unpopular stand based on principles and sticking with it to the bitter end is the oppoiste of being a demagouge. (Steve)

McCain has not been whining about his loss to Bush in 2000, he rallied to Bush and campaigned for him then, and in 2004, and has been steadfast with the president on the surge and on immigration. (Richard)

The littany of Fred possitions is a nice laundry list of boiler-plate big “R” republicansim and frankly I don’t see the possitions you have listed there for Fred as being more than hair diffrent from Romney’s and an inch from McCain’s. (RTerry)

I think people perfer to elect strong and principled leaders who they disagee with on an issue or two though, rather than somone who’s platform is tailor made for the previous election. Fred and Romney may be “well rounded” candidates, but McCain, Huckabee, and even Ron Paul are “sharp” candidates, they stand for something and they standfast, that is what I want in a president.

Just because one’s insult of McCain is prefaced by saying “Well yes he did honorable service for this country” is not a blank check to attack the man in such a way. I don’t think anyone can question McCain’s patriotism.

BJ I can hit the brandy win or loose my friend!

4 Sure Signs of a Huckabee Surge:

    1. Statistical Tie for 2nd in the South Carolina Polls
Check your link again… it’s McCain and Huckabee tied at 24% - Thompson continuing to slip at 4th with 16%.

    2. Fundraising Goals Surpassed - $300,000 in less than 24 hours

    3. Website Traffic - Number of Visitors (far more traffic than Thompson)
http://siteanalytics.compete.com/mikehuckabee.com+fredthompson.com/?metric=uv (your “velocity” metric is a bit misleading if you ask me)

    4. Huckabee has the money to run some real advertising in SC and continues to gain momentum in fundraising every day to support his upcoming ads in FL and more!
