Today between 4-7pm during O-Fest Marquette College Republicans held a straw poll of all candidates both Democrat and Republican. Surprisingly there were over 100 votes cast. And from these votes there were interesting results on who Marquette thinks the president should be. –I’d like to note that College Dem’s also did a similar poll, however they did not do hold an open primary and only Democrat candidates were on the ballot. The Candidates on the ballot were Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Gravel and Kucinich. For Republicans you got the option of Romney, Paul, McCain, Huckabee, Thompson, Giuliani and Keyes (why?).

The raw results of the Marquette Primary show that Barak Obama took the victory, getting 26% of the total vote, beating the Republican candidates by a little more than 5%. However when just concerning Democrat votes, Obama won in a landslide, winning over 76% of the vote. Kucinich won the second most number of Democrat votes. Hillary barely squeaked out enough votes to beat Gravel and Edwards who tied for last.

On the Republican side of things it was a much closer race. It was a two man battle between Ron Paul and John McCain (for some reason he gets counted on the Republican side still). Paul edged out McCain by 1% (32-31%). Romney took a distant third on a second tear of Republicans, beating Mike Huckabee 18% to 11%. And the number one sign Fred Thompson is poised for a face plant: He got 4% of the Marquette Primary, barely edging out Rudy. And someone actually voted for Alan Keyes. This couldn’t have been a Florida ballot. It was pretty well marked, and straightforward, nothing confusing about it so how Keyes got a vote…same thing with Gravel for that matter.

I think they way the votes spanned out it shows a good cross section of how Marquette will vote in the upcoming election. Ron Paul and Obama won the most votes given that the younger voters are more apt to support them. I am surprised how many votes McCain got however. I really don’t think he would have made it a contest for Ron Paul.

  1. Unfortunately, college students don’t vote due to apathy, this is hardly a defeat of Thompson :-) It’s good to see some turnout though.

I’ve been saying it for weeks, we as a party either nominate McCain or we lose. Winning a general election is more important than keeping Rush Limbaugh happy.

    Bob Dole…Bob Dole…Bob Dole…

  4. Dole/Kemp very well could have been one of the best tickets in ages

  5. Brandon-

Given our location in the ballrooms. Back Corner far right (as you enter) and the amount of total foot trafic -removing the people at other orgs.- I would say that over 100 votes was a good amount of the foot trafic that came through

Ron Paul won. And this is supposed to be a place of higher learning. I know that people in college are supposed to rebel and such, but Ron Paul, the anti-Semite, bigotted conspiracy nut won the Republican race.

And do we want to loose our Party to the cneter and not have a conservative base any more. I know i would vote for McCain over the Defeatocrats, but the Primary is not to look for who you think can win the General Election, it is to steer the Party to a direction that we wnat it to go. Man, this is just frustrating me, just like it does Rush.

  7. Stix- A quick exploration of the location of the O-Fest table would reveal a very simple answer on why Ron Paul was able to win ;)

  8. Justin- I agree you got good results on the straw poll. Good work! I was just saying it might be tough to get students to turn out for the actual election and primary.

  9. Brandon-
Agreed then. However I think that if Obama is the dem candidate you’ll see a higher that expected turn out because he has a younger demographic -plus half of MU is from Chicago- and subsequently a higher republican turn out for people that hate B. Hussein

Stix, way to just repeat the newest news trend. Anyone that has followed Ron Paul at all knew about these allegations well before the New Republic story broke. Ron Paul is not racist.

Let me give you a little bit of a mental workout since you are obviously in need of some. Racism requires group think, that is to say it requires a person’s willingness to judge entire groups of people at once. Something that is strictly impossible from a libertarian viewpoint (ie Ron Paul’s views).

Your charges are weak at best and your intellectual laziness is sad. If you want to talk about embarrasing profiteering from attacking groups of people the GOP establishment can take some heat for the way gay marriage has played out over the last 5 years. Unfortunately Stix you appear to be hoping to just take a cheap shot at Ron Paul in a forum where you did not expect any contrary views.
