Via Hotline On Call:

McLean, VA – Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:

“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”

I can’t say I didn’t expect this after the South Carolina results but, I can understand it. I am not upset that he dropped. I wish that more people would have come to believe in his vision and ability but, he wasn’t a 21st century campaigner.

I don’t think that anyone who pulls for a candidate that is behind in the polls is a failure. When I posted about Fred Thompson it was not attempt to predict the winner, it was an effort to support the candidate I believe would do the best job leading this nation. I am neither a pollster nor a bandwagoner, if you want to know who is going to win so you can vote for them, look elsewhere.

I believe the primary is about supporting the candidate who stands up for the best ideas, the ideas that have made this country great. Fred Thompson did the best job of supporting those ideas in the past and had solid policy proposals to do so in the future. Every vote for Fred Thompson was a demostration of support for those ideas. That is how I see the primary, it’s an opportunity to support the candidate that represents what you believe in the best manner possible, no matter who is ahead in the polls. I do believe “my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort”.

You won’t see bitterness here, Fred stood up for what he believed, I still believe in conservative principles and there is no point in constantly saying “Fred would have or Fred might have”. What is important now is what the conservative candidate will do and what we will do as Republicans. The way we vote in the rest of the primaries is the way to communicate that, regardless of the poll standings of any of the remaining candidates.

It’d be easy to blame the dominance of horse race journalism for the stigma attached to backing a loser, but it’s more likely that it’s human nature. It seems pretty well accepted in Washington that a person who works on campaigns is going to back a loser from time to time — unless you’re managing losing campaigns, the candidate whom you supported tells more about your background than your won-loss record (though for some reason this doesn’t apply to Bob Shrum or Donna Brazille).

Are you going to give in and join team Mitt? Just in case, I’ll save you some typing and provide you the link. http://www.mittromney.com

So…. You need a new dark horse candidate?

Well, you’re in luck. In Arizona, there are several dozen candidates to choose from due to a strange provision in the state’s election law. To get on the primary ballot, you only needed to file an application.

If you visit ProjectWhiteHouse08.com, you can read (and watch!) the policies of all the dark-horse candidates, from the eye-patch-wearing Republican Sean “CF” Murphy to the ultra-lib, trash-talking, conceptual-artist Democrat Libby “Doctress Neutopia” Hubbard.

And all of them are competing in a “reality journalism” experiment for the Tucson Weekly’s endorsement.

Tomorrow night’s the official Project White House debate, which you can watch online through ProjectWhiteHouse08.com

    Stop on by!

Brandon, you had success supporting a conservative, ideas-based Texan in 2004. This year`s version even lead GOP candidates in fourth quarter fundraising. In all seriousness, though, I wonder where Thompson backers place there support now?

Sorry this is the first that I dropped by. Bad timing but when I saw that Fred dropped out it made me think of you. Touching.
Mitt seemed complimentary of Fred in a press release that came out today.

Wish some of those statements were made during the primaries in the 8th Congressional… I wasn’t expecting Fred Thompson to drop out this early but I’m not surprised. Now, where will those 15% go?

How will anyone even recognize that Fred Thompson is no longer seeking the Republican presidential nomination? Never have I witnessed such high hopes for a candidate sizzle so completely, and all due to the extreme lackluster performance of the candidate himself. In August 2007 my brother asked me who I thought would win the GOP nomination. I said based on Thompson’s credentials, and conservative voting record, that he was the likely nominee given the other contenders and the amounts of money and support they had at that time. But who would have predicted that Thompson would sleep his way through a bid for the White House?

    what..
    the ..
    hell..
The funniest part is there are 5 candidates from each party that refused to participate that I dont recognize

Too bad you wasted your time on this bum. Seems to me if he actually wanted it, it was his to take (of course that was 6 months ago).
