Yesterday’s Madison Capital Times carries a letter to the editor I authored. Dave Zweifel, the Cap Times’ editor, wrote a column earlier this week on the state Supreme Court race. I found it ironic that Zweifel used some pretty “hardball” language in a column calling for a more civil tone. So I wrote them a letter, and I appreciate their decision to publish it:
Dear Editor:
Dave Zweifel uses the harsh rhetoric he criticizes in his column on the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. He urges a more civil tone in the race while at the same time calling former Lt. Gov. Margaret Farrow “strident,” an “attack dog on the prowl” who was responsible for a “smear campaign.”
These terms are highly vitriolic, especially when Farrow is so well regarded as a community leader.
Zweifel writes fondly of the State Bar’s Judicial Campaign Integrity Committee for “trying to keep the high court campaign on a high ground and free of personal attacks.”
We now know from recently released public records that the committee’s own internal deliberations are marked by extensive name-calling and biting attacks.
Nonetheless, perhaps Zweifel could also aspire to a campaign “free of personal attacks,” starting with his own column.
