Another year another CR state convention, this year CRs from around the state are lucky enough to be able to hold the convention stuff in the Assembly Chambers…sadly there is no wireless connection that I can get on to so this will be a post live live-blog. Just thought I’d put it out there that Malkin was pretty good last night. Spoke on Immigration, so she did a good job on an issue that I’m not passionate about. Malkin did mention that she remembered (hopefully still reads) GOP3. Granted she mentioned remembering Brandon…(boo)

I really could get used to being in here ;)

Pledge of Allegiance…to weed out any communists.

Let the business begin…

Wrasse talks about his goals accomplished (hehehehe)
We raised money…
Wrasse launched Leadership Development…he’s proud of that, it’s keen

Elections
Madison nominates Carrow… Point 2nds
Madison nominates Fuller… Ripon 2nds
Can Madison nominate both? Not that I care all that much
Madison gave a speech… I zoned out it was about Carrow as a leader er something

Carrow gives speech. He was in Iraq…calls Wrasse’s job the “Wrasse Revolution” I’m happier to be a part of the Walker Revolution, though I swear I heard Karrow take credit for Walker, even though he was never in the office. Did he even know where the office was? Please find Milwaukee County on a map. Secondly, Wrasse Revolution? Being the hand-picked successor to a one term leader isn’t much a revolution. Damn if that’s all it takes to have a revolution these days …utilize facebook and have a tech savy communications guy. Does that mean I’ll get more than just 17 facebook messages about the state convention? Overall he kinda sounded like McCain

Madison gives 2nd speech
Luke has unique brand of leadership and experience
Fuller’s speech on Walker experience. First and only reason to be a WICR is to elect republicans. Sold his soul to Scott Walker instead of meeting with chapters…wouldn’t change a thing
Carrow 57.9
Fuller 20.1

So just like real republicans the war vet gets it over the legit experienced candidate

Sol Grosskoff vs Chris Schaefer
Chris…from Ripon…new chapter gives Karrow credit for that too
Dan Suhr gives Sol’s speech. Speech will undoubtedly overshadow anything else said today
Sol wears a bow tie…I’ll let you judge that

These assembly chairs are comfortable…I’m thinking I might just take a nappy nap if this gets anymore boring
Sol vice chair by… bunches
Treasurer:
Jeff Bloomberg? Nominated by Point he’s from Madison
Kinda means we’re stuck with him…not in a bad way, if I would complain I would have nominated someone

Secretary: Whitewater nominates Ashley Karingsworth?
Well we are stuck with her to…Im not complaining

Well any business that I care about is done. WICRs have added a few more tools to the toolbox. It’ll be nice to see them next year at this time…if I see them before then I’ll be hella surprised.

Sound a bit bitter Mr. Phillips…hopefully someone with a little less bias will post on what actually happened at convention. Maybe a after a 2-1 MU defeat last year and a 2-1 defeat this year, you will begin to understand. Wait, everyone else must be the clueless ones and you offer the deep insights.

Was it just me, or did the esteemed John Connors leave the meeting pouting after Fuller lost – there’s some true dedication. This organization is more than Milwaukee County and CRs across the state understand that.

Fuller should be commended for his work for Walker, but Carow shouldn’t be knocked for his military service nor his willingness to participate in state activities and take the time to meet with the people he would be representing. Maybe if Nick wasn’t putting his life on the line in Iraq he would have had some more time to kiss the rings of Wisconsin politicians, you’re right.

It seems that unless an MU candidate is elected, MU doesn’t care. Maybe that’s why CRs are standing behind other candidates.

Are you seriously insinuating that this administration hasn’t accomplished more than any other administration in recent history – maybe if you all participate with state activities you would understand.

  2. Maybe MU doesnt care because we were thrown under the bus two years ago…
MU CRs have always done their own thing anyways. This is unfortunately because most of the political action in Wisconsin is Madison or Milwaukee based we really haven’t needed to utilize the State CRs much. The State CRs didn’t do much if anything for Walker. I’d be surprised if more that 5 of them came in for more than a weekends worth of Walker activites, even though the state loves to take credit for Luke’s work. The state is standing behind other candidates because you have to hand pick them to run against an MUCR.
And every year this just begs the question: Does MUCRs even need to be part of the state crs? We work well and get stuff done without the states interference.

  3. A convention attendee says:

Thrown under the bus? You’re kidding, right?

If the MU CRs have always “done their own thing anyways” why would you expect the state federation to elect them to lead 17 federations? Furthermore, if MU “didn’t need to utilize the state crs” why would one of your members want to lead that organization? Again, Luke deserves a lot of credit for helping Walker, but life exists outside of Milwaukee County.

If I remember correctly, both this year and last year the MU candidates announced they were running after the other candidates. Not exactly a “hand picked” candidate to run against an MU candidate.

How did the state take credit for Luke’s work? Plus, what more can the state crs do to help Walker? I got a few emails from my chapter chair to come campaign for Walker (in fact it was discussed in a few of our meetings). Wrasse can’t come to all of these places and drag CRs to Milwaukee. At some point, we have to take responsibility for our own inaction. Unless you are a political insider, not many people (Freshman, Sophomore and Junior CRs) know who Scott Walker even is. It is hard enough to get these people to volunteer on campus let alone travel to Milwaukee to campaign for a spring election race they know nothing about. I’m not down playing the importance, but instead noting the difficulty in getting non-Milwaukee students energized. Plus, didn’t the state offer to reimburse gas as an incentive to go to Milwaukee?

Who is the new Chairman of the MU federation going to be? I hope that he/she can work with the state federation to fix some of these problems you’ve been talking about. However, the clear “snubbing” of the state fed after back to back losses doesn’t help anyone, especially GOP candidates that we want to see elected.

  4. Mike Tellier says:

Justin you show little class by purposely misspelling Carrow’s name. Why? Carrow won because he actually decided to run a campaign. I am not knocking Fuller for helping Walker’s campaign, but how can you run for WICR state chair and not be willing to travel the state and talk to the different chapters? You can’t put together a last minute campaign of youtube videos and expect to win. Carrow personally traveled to almost all the chapters and listened to people’s concerns and questions. He outlined a detailed plan. He was more organized.

Another point I want to make about the WICR convection in general is that I was very disappointed that the conference was scheduled on the same weekend as the Future WI Conference. This should have been avoid! WI does not get a lot of these conferences and why double book? I understand the Malkin conflict was used as an excuse, but I didn’t see listening to her as being worth my time. She wants to be the next Ann Coulter. No substance, just verbal attacks on people she disagrees with (WSJ, libertarians, non-interventionist, ron paul). Richard Viguirie and David Keene were speakers at future WI and I can grandam tee that when Malkin is dead none will remember her, but people like Viguirie and Keene will be remembered for dedicating their lives to furthering the conservative movement.

Not sure who the “Convention Attendee” is but I agree with him/her 100%. I’ve attended 6 conventions and have been in the loop since 2002. The state organization has been getting better and better every year. Hats off to the Madison CRs they did a fantastic job. Planning and executing a convention isn’t easy.

It is true that Marquette has been a major contributor but it took the entire state to get it where it is today. The 2003 convention saw about 30 total members attend… at least 10 of those were from the school that hosted it, UW-Stout. Back then they had a tough time raising even $500. Ryan Wrasse’s leadership utilized the people and resources he had and did an amazing job overcoming any challenges along the way. Ryan’s fundraising is unprecedented and made the convention the cheapest convention to attend in years. Nick Carrow will define himself soon enough– I stand by him and his executive team 100%. I am confident they will do a fine job. And BTW, its spelled Carrow not Karrow.

Justin your attitude sucks– if you were bored to tears you insulted your fellow peers who were leading the convention and the people who organized it. As far as elections… I’ve seen many cases where chapters help out one another– I.E. Eau Claire, River Falls and Stout help each other a lot and I’ve heard Whitewater and Madison helping each other out. However none of them expected someone else to do the work for them.

A lot of your posts are negative. Shape up buddy and be a bit more optimistic and positive. Even though they maybe your opinions, every post represents more than just yourself.

  6. Nan08 says:

Where to start with this comment…I don’t even know.

To start, a hehehe to the goals Wrasse accomplished? Do you honestly think raising the amount of money the federation has raised in the last three years in one year (among other thing) is not an accomplishment?

Carrow/Karrow, in case you didn’t notice from the 40 people wearing his stickers, is spelled CAROW. And let’s just talk about this gentleman you seem to dislike so much…because I’ve got a few things to mention. I am so glad you were happy to be a part of the Walker revolution in Milwaukee (which Nick can find very well on a map by the way), but things were also going on the WICR federation. And, by the way, Nick gave Luke credit for Walker…he didn’t take any credit. Hand picked successor huh?…where did that come from? Oh and comparing Nick to McCain…that’s rich. I’m pretty sure there are other people in the world to be compared to if you were looking for a negative comment there, because being compared to McCain is pretty much a compliment. Lastly, war vet gets it over legit experienced candidate? Are you serious?…you have the nerve to say something even close to negative about a Marine’s service to our country…and come close to comparing it to work on a campaign? All I can say is…wow.

If Luke was so experienced in campaigning…we all wanted to see it. We waited to see it, but…it never really happened.

If you feel you’re stuck with the executive board then you should have nominated somebody…so don’t say anything at all.

Finally, you’d be surprised to see the WICRs before this time next year?…We’d be more surprised to see you…

  7. I actually thought Carrow’s name was spelled with a K…for that I apologize. I think I got them all

As for a convention attendee…the MU chair is willing to work with the state.. but the state is going to have to be willing to bridge the divide as well. There is nothing a few beers and some successful campaiging on both parts can’t fix

Mike- I agree the scheduling of Future wisconsin was a dropped ball..Malkin speaking isn’t my style. Having a bunch of liberals come in and attack her ruins the whole experience -plus illegal immigration isnt high on my list of concerns- Granted I can’t agree with you when you say Viguirie is more important

  8. Wade Miller says:

“So just like real republicans the war vet gets it over the legit experienced candidate”…. Hey Phillips, I am curious how roughly 26 years in Congress and the Senate, and being a commissioned officer in the United States Military doesn’t qualify one as expierienced enough to run for president. I’m not taking anything away from any of the other candidates just simply pointing out that your comment was simply cheap and out of line. I do not know the other candidate that Carrow ran against. I’m sure he is a fine candidate also, but your sarcastic remarks about Carrow and his military experience are insulting. From what I understand Carrow ran a better campaign and won because of it. He showed discipline, prior proper planning, organization, professionalism, hard work, etc, in executing his campaign plan. All things he learned as a combat veteran in the United States Marine Corps. And how much more experienced can you really be at 22, 23 or what ever age they both are. While the other candidate was working his way up learning from his experiences Carrow was working his way up and learning from a different angle. Both candidates have different and unique experience. And so what if some of Carrows experience came from books he lugged around with him all over the world whether in Africa, Iraq, Kuwait, and while serving on Navy vessels. Can Carrow help it if his experience in leadership, professionalism, organization, hard work, ect., comes not while sitting in an assembly discussing policy but while leading marines in combat? To make a long story short, I can’t tell you if Carrow is the best man for the job, but I can tell you that your cheap and arrogant comments about him winning were offensive to this former infantry squad leader of marines. And by the looks of the final tallies of the voting, most of your fellow college republicans disagreed with your opinions also. So in conclusion, while you talk about Carrow and his experience let me throw something out there from a kindergarten level political rule book… it is probably never a good idea to be a smartass and take cheap shots about someone because they made the offensive and unforgivable mistake of volunteering to serve their country during a time of war in the United States military.

  9. offended says:

    It’s Carow… one r

Justin, i think that you are very lucky that no democrats have seen your posts both from this year and last year. If they got ahold of your comments they would have a field day. Smearing the WICR’s all over their blogs. Accusations you made last year could have pulled the state into unnecessary legal issues. Not only that but the CRNC is looking for trash to talk about and you are spoon feeding it to them. Maybe it’s about time you respect your fellow CR’s and accept the fact that a non-MUCR did a fantastic job on the state level. After the last MUCR was state chair this federation needed an overhaul and Ryan did a fantastic job. The last MUCR drove the federation into the ground. I miss the days when Madison and Marquette used to fight to the death for state control, at least then both schools played an active and useful role on the state level.

  10. Sarah says:

Even though I wanted to, I was not able to make the convention. I don’t know how much my comments will matter since I wasn’t there. But from my understanding, there were two great candidates up for state chair, and one had to lose. It seemed that the winner did a lot more state-wide campaigning and the loser did a lot more Walker campaiging. Both are good things to do, but voters had to choose

I have read the post and it is pathetic and biased. It’s important to root on your favored candidate, particularly if he is from your school, but it is not tactful or appropriate to first ignore the details of the other candidate’s speech or supporting speeches (i.e. “Madison gave a speech… I zoned out it was about Carrow as a leader er something.”), and second, put snide comments in about people you just don’t like or disagree with (i.e.: Wrasse talks about his goals accomplished (hehehehe”):

I am very proud to be a College Republican and proud to be one from Marquette, but I have personally not supported all of its actions, particularly at the state convention, and have withdrawn a bit as a result. I think Marquette CRs as a group has a ton of great people, but unfortunately we all have our bad apples. Certain members of Marquette CRs, through their words and actions, have alienated the rest of the state chapters because of past pouting or griping about election results or whatever the issue at hand may be. In reality, MUCRs is not this way, but posts like this would suggest otherwise.

If MUCRs wants to command more leadership and respect, certain members should act more tactfully and more maturely if things don’t go Marquette’s way. You win some, you lose some.

And as a side note, and to answer the question of the convention attendee about who is the MUCR chair, it’s Justin, the author of this post. So it will be interesting to see how the collaboration and communication will work out…
