Republicans should not be providing political cover for Democrats on gas prices.

For the last several weeks, John Gard has been hammering incumbent Democrat Congressman Steve Kagen on gas prices. In press releases and telephone and local town hall meetings, Gard has pounded Kagen’s votes against expanded domestic oil production.

Kagen’s response is that typical of a politician without a plan: he empaneled a committee. That way, whenever a reporter or constituent asks about gas prices, he can say, “I’ve brought together some of the best minds in the district to talk about this issue, and we need to wait another few weeks to hear their recommendations in a report,” or something like that.

However, for such a committee to have credibility, it can’t be seen as an assembly of the Congressman’s donors. And that’s where the unfortunate news lies. Republican Mayor Tim Hanna of Appleton and Republican former mayor Paul Jadin of Green Bay are both members of Kagen’s committee.

I understand that for whatever reason they may not like John Gard, and that they may even lust after that particular seat themselves. But then you simply sit the race out, don’t help Gard at all, and wait for 2010. Joining the Congressman’s Energy Advisory Committee is hurting the Republican Party by providing political cover for a vulnerable Democrat, and that’s very unfortunate.

Isn’t it possible that Hanna and Jadin are just more interested in coming up with a workable energy solution than partisan politics?

  2. SPET3R Says:

they probably don’t like John Gard… just a like a lot of people. I haven’t been that way in a while… but people aren’t thrilled about having John Gard elected in certain areas of the district.

  3. Jay Bullock Says:

Maybe Hanna and Jadin don’t trust a guy who believes and peddles urban legends to end America’s oil addiction?

  4. Goofticket Says:

    Gard is a lapdog.
Oil drilling is his only answer…a bad choice, in any book…20 years later, can we ask Gard how that oil drilling thing went?

Gard needs to fnid a real job, as he’s been living off his wife for the last two! What a slacker.

I agree with Evan, why is it a bad thing that Hanna and Jadin are willing to put partisanship aside, even in an election year. If our politicians on both sides cared more about issues and solutions than party loyalty and re-election we would be much better off as a country. Kudos Tim Hanna and Paul Jadin.

To be fair the crap spewed by Republicans (oil drilling, gas tax holidays-this one is McCains, and begging Saudi Arabia to please increase output-this one is Bush’s great idea) are all terrible. Why is no one accepts that oil is not the main energy of the future? We need alternative fuels.

    Jay,

They’ve admitted the error. They’ve stated so to area media after they were informed of it. They can’t ’scrub it’ from the website, because it’s a press release from June 30th.

Only Kagen likes to scrub his press releases from his website afterwards…trust me, I’ve gone over them.

The only ones who care are you liberal bloggers who apparently can’t go online to any of the GB TV stations and watch or read their coverage. If that’s all you guys have to counter the bleedying Steve Kagen is taking on gas prices, it’s going to be fun to watch all this from here.

WISPOLITICS DC WRAP: “Moving to address rising gas prices and inoculate himself from voter unrest this fall, freshman U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Appleton, has formed an energy advisory committee of at least a dozen local business leaders to keep him informed on the local impact of what many Americans believe is an energy crisis.”

This is what I’m talking about - Republicans providing political cover for a Democrat… http://www.wispolitics.com/index.iml?Content=174
