(other working title: Jet Favre)
FINALLY!
I have been waiting for this day to come for weeks. The Brett Favre soap opera is finally over, with him ending on Broadway and Aaron Rodgers can sleep easy knowing that he’ll be the starting quarterback and Ted Thompson can now move the team forward. And now everyone can finally stop talking about it. And God willing Packer fans will stop whinning and crying and realizing there is life after Brett. Anyone that feels otherway is too stupid for their own good. Packer Fans have been spoiled and now they look as childish as their ‘beloved’ quarterback as they cry that he’s gone and threaten to jump from the fan bandwagon. (You idiots can just mail me your tickets now).

The compensation for the Favre wasn’t originally known; it’s believed to be a single draft pick in the fourth round that will increase in value based off Jets performance and the percent of snaps that Favre takes. Ted Thompson will wisely parlay this pick into a few more draft picks that will be able to bulk up the front four and increase the depth in the secondary.

Favre is the third quarterback to change teams after spending 16 plus seasons with one team. Johnny Unitas and Jim Hart spent 16 years with one team before ending their careers another. Hart spent his time with the St. Louis Cardinals before spending a year with the Redskins, Unitas played for the Baltimore Colts before ending his career with the San Diego Chargers. Other notable quarterbacks that have changed teams after a considerable amount of time with one team include Joe Montana, Joe Namath and Warren Moon.

I’m sure that Brett will be missed by Packer fans, myself included, but winning will fix that. I have little doubt in the Packers going 10-6 or better and making the playoffs. The NFC North will undoubtedly be atrocious this year, the Bears still suck and the Lions are well… the Lions. Which leaves Minnesota: No quarterback and ownership hopping the team will play terribly so the Vikings can move to LA; and though Adrian Peterson carried my fantasy team last year, I don’t believe he’ll able to put up those numbers two years in a row. I’m also confident in saying that the Jets were not Brett Favre away from making the playoffs, or having a .500 winning percentage. Don’t forget he’ll have to play Tom Brady and Randy Moss twice, the first time being in week two, the Jets home opener. I will be surprised if the Jets win any more than 8 games, and if the Packers don’t make the playoffs.

For those of you who don’t know. Favre’s first pass was a completion… to himself with lost 13 yards. The final pass he threw in a Packer uniform was to Corey Webster, of the New York Giants in overtime of the NFC Championship game.

My question now is: Is EA Sports going to have to change the Madden Cover?

    What is wrong with you?

I can (kind of) understand local sports media types being eager to kow-tow to the anti-Favre establishment since they have been seething with rage towards Favre for years and depend on the “organization” to butter their bread. I don’t know what a college blogger gets out of this though, other than the abillity to say, “look at me I am totally unaffected by sentimentallity or emotion.”

I know ,I know, sports is a business, but is there not room for an ounce of the old notion of loyallty? You may not realize it but it is the intangible ideas of loyality and yes even the power of symbols and emotions (Number 4 taking to the field in a green-bay jersey for instance) that give the game the power it holds over the imagination of the fans. Have you ever played football?

Frankly the only one who seems childish is you, unleashing so much hate on Favre, has anyone ever given more to a football team than Brett has for the Packers?

Brett is not past his prime, he could be at his peak for all we know and as long as Brett plays for the Jets, I am a Jets fan. I don’t think I can even support the Packers until everyone invovled in this vainglorious insanity is purged from the organization.

I’m a transplant so I am not a fan of the Packers nor Brett Favre, but are you seriously saying they are better off without him? Basically it came down to the Packers deciding that they wanted to be assured that A.Rodgers would be around for several years to come; we will see if that truly is the case. However, they could have signed Favre, got rid of Rodgers, and either filled the gap with a sub-par free agent QB for a coupple years after Favre retired or they could have drafted a decent QB next year. It looks to me like they have chosen to be mediocre over the next five years rather than choosing to be really good for another year or two and then really bad for a couple after that. The problem, however, is that mediocrity doesn’t win Super Bowls.

I think this is one of those topics where there is very little anyone can do to persuade someone who disagrees.

Nobody chooses mediocrity. In the NFL, any team can elevate themselves to contenders within a few short years. Indeed, Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer and Jeff Hostetler are all Super Bowl winning quarterbacks.

Can Aaron Rodgers be equal to Trent Dilfer? Yes, without question.

It is no secret that Ted Thompson probably wanted Favre gone even sooner but both parties seem to carry blame. The Packers were ready to move on after well over four months of Brett being retired.

Green Bay has a good running back, good wide outs and a solid defense. Beyond that, they probably still have the best quarterback in the division.

    Somewhat related note

Here is a list of other quarterbacks who brought their teams to a Super Bowl (or vice versa):

    Rex Grossman
    Jake Delhomme
    Kerry Collins
    Tony Eason
    Stan Humphries

The Packers are still well positioned to be competitive this season.

I doubt Favre’s success with the Jets…8-8 maybe. You can’t seriously tell me that He was the piece you needed to get to the Super Bowl. Certainly not Pro-Bowl Caliber. And the reason I am hating on Brett is because of the monumental distraction he became (I say a bigger distraction than TO could be). I was unbelievably annoyed and now I am happy to see him go. I am loyal to the Green Bay Packers (yes I like Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy better than Favre now) moreso that I am to a player. What annoys me more is that I have talked to an unbelievable number of people that say they are now Jets fans or refuse to watch the Packers that’s what’s childish.

You are right #4 not coming out of the tunnel at Green Bay just won’t seem right. But if you check out one of those links you might just realize that Bart Starr gave so much more to the Packers than Brett ever could (negate money, I mean on the field).

    Josh-
    Yes… yes I am
We wouldn’t have gotten more than one year out of Favre (he is under contract for 3 more years by the way) . And he probably would hold the team hostage again next year wanting to play so we’d have to deal with this for another off season.

Why would you get rid of Rodgers when you’ve been grooming him to learn from Favre and eventually take over? I’m sure the same thing was said about Steve Young when Montana went to the Chiefs.

And we won’t be mediocre over the next 5 years. Green Bay is still a playoff team. 10-6 should win the North and that is do-able. The entire team is still there, I think the front 4 is shaky but as a whole the team will be successful, for years to come. We don’t need to go into the Free Agent market, we’ve got Rodgers Brohm and Flynn, all three of which I would suggest could be starters at some point in their careers.

    Chuck-
Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Kurt Warner, Mark Rypien, Hostelter have all won the same number of Super Bowls as Brett

  6. Kat, Brandon's cousin says:

Dan, I believe in loyalty strongly. Unfortunately, Favre has proven that he does not.

There were great Packers before Brett, there will be great Packers after Brett, and–surprise, surprise–there were other great Packers concurrent with Brett. The team and the franchise are much bigger than one player, and it is that TEAM I have cheered all my life and will continue to cheer. If Brett isn’t a part of that team, then best of luck to him, but I won’t be cheering him on anymore.

You know, listening to some (former) Pack fans this past week, I’ve had the oddest feeling that I’d heard all this before. Thanks to your comment, I’ve finally figured out what it was–you all sound exactly like those outraged, in-denial Hillary Clinton “PUMAs.” Heck, you even make the same arguments about how the inexperienced but talented younger guy should have “waited his turn”; how you were personally betrayed by “the organization” and thus will never support them again in “protest” (like they care) until the leadership you deem responsible has been publicly and thoroughly tarred and feathered; how “the organization” owed your champion something better for “everything he/she’s done for them”; how the new guy who won out is presumptuous, untalented, and an all-around disaster, despite the lack of support for any of those claims; how there was a conspiracy from the start to shut out your champion, once again despite the complete lack of support for your claims; and how because your sage opinion was not heeded, “the organization” is now doomed to destruction this year (despite all the evidence pointing to the unlikelihood of that supposed “fact”). Congrats, Dan–you’re officially a football PUMA!

And to all of your fellow FPUMAs: Green Bay is Mr. Rodgers’ neighborhood now, he’s got the makings of a fine quarterback, and Favre is about to learn that–regardless of what his ego told him and the beliefs of his FPUMA followers–even legendary QBs aren’t worth two farts without a decent team. The Packers are plenty playoff worthy without Favre; the Jets aren’t good even with him. Them’s the facts. Deal with it.

    Rodgers sucks..so does the Pack!

Tightwad TedThompson should be fired, and so should fatass McCarthy!
