The Obama Campaign has a knack for appealing to two constituencies on opposite sides of a divisive issue at the same time. So for instance, on the one hand, he believes that the federal government should repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and he promises to appoint judges with “the empathy to understand what it’s like to be gay.” Yet at the same time, Joe Biden can say at the vice presidential debate that he and Barack oppose gay marriage.
In the same vein, Obama’s camp recently launched a “Faith, Family, and Values Tour” featuring pro-life former congressman Tim Roemer and pro-life former Reagan DOJ official Doug Kmiec. The month-long tour was originally scheduled to stop in Wisconsin at some point. Prof. Kmiec is also associated with ProLifeProObama.com, a project of the Matthew 25 Network PAC.
Yet at the same time the “Faith, Family and Values Tour” with two pro-lifers is out on the trail, the Obama campaign is also sending the “Women’s Tour” to Wisconsin. It features two 100% pro-choice congresswomen (Susan Davis of CA and Betty McCollum of MN) and Dr. Sarah Weddington, described by the release as a “prominent women’s rights attorney.”
She handled women’s issues for Jimmy Carter in the White House, where she was instrumental in getting Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the federal appellate bench. She is much more well-known, however, as the attorney for Roe in Roe v. Wade. Hence, UC-Berkley has proclaimed her a “National Public Health Hero” and in 1980 she received the Margaret Sanger Award, which is Planned Parenthood’s highest honor apparently.
So next time you hear a Matthew 25 Network radio ad or see Doug Kmiec quoted, just remember that the advocate for abortion in Roe v. Wade is campaigning for Obama.
