I was voter number 4 in my Milwaukee ward this morning at 7:30. Have you voted yet? Here is the rundown on the two elections (State Superintendent and Circuit Court Judge) and the best candidates:
What is the State Superintendent?
“The [state] superintendent is responsible for governing Wisconsin’s public schools, administering state and federal aid, and offering guidance to teachers and administrators. The superintendent also crafts a spending request every two years to run the agency and provide state aid to public schools, which is subject to approval by the Legislature.” (Description and Profiles from the Green Bay Press Gazette)
Candidate Dr.Van Mobley website
Age: 40
Resides: Thiensville
Education: Bachelor’s degree, Vanderbilt University, 1990; master’s and doctorate degrees in history, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1999.
Priorities: Work to ensure that mandates are funded and, if not, remove them to give schools more flexibility, emphasize the value of a technical school education, work with the University of Wisconsin and technical college board to oppose tuition increases, reform Milwaukee Public Schools.
Quote: “We should shoot to have the Milwaukee school district broken up into smaller school districts around the state that work better.”
Candidate Rose Fernandez website
Age: 51
Resides: Mukwonago
Education: Bachelor’s degree, Northern Illinois University, 1979; master’s degree in nursing, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1989.
Priorities: Reform the Department of Public Instruction, reward quality teachers and dismiss poor performers, emphasize alternatives to traditional classroom instruction.
Quote: “I think districts should have the freedom to pay great teachers a lot more than they presently do. And a merit pay system should also give districts more freedom to dismiss teachers who aren’t up to the task, no matter how long they’ve been around.”
Candidate for County Judge: Dan Gabler
Check out Dan Gabler’s website. Dan’s a terrific leader in our community and he has great prosecutorial experience. He will interpret the law fairly and justly and will not “legislate from the bench.”

I was voter number 43 in my ward at 3:15 p.m. today. It’s truly a shame, and downright pathetic, at the voter turnout.
Yeah, my girlfriend’s ward only had 16 reporting at 6 pm!
Congrats to Rose Fernandez and Dan Gabler on their wins!
