In several news articles, in its press releases, and on its blog and website, Fair Wisconsin has been pushing a poll statistic saying, “Three quarters of Wisconsin voters support some form of legal recognition for gay and lesbian couples.” They cite for this proposition a poll that they paid for Greenburg Quinlan Rosner to conduct in mid-January.
If Wisconsin media are going to give this poll credibility, they should insist that Fair Wisconsin give us greater context for it. What was the sample? Adults? Registered Voters? Likely Voters? When was this question asked? What other questions or information preceded it? Most importantly, how exactly was this questioned worded?
Rather than just being spoon-fed a statistic from an interest group, Wisconsin media should insist on transparency.
Second, it would be interesting to see the whole poll to see how significantly it lines up with what Doyle proposed. Did Team Doyle ask Fair Wisconsin to run a poll on specific issues or provisions before making a political commitment to do this? Did Team Doyle have its mind made up, but wanted data standing by to show public support when the inevitable torrent of news stories emerged?
