Update: MU College Dems: “Election rules are for wimps”
Written by Brian on November 7, 2006 – 10:09 am -Welcome, if you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or subscribe to our email newsletter. Thanks for visiting!
Yes, the College Democrats / the homosexual lobby on campus plastered the dorms with literature last night. Why do you think I got that post out last night before I woke up this morning? Liberals are so predictable: rules only matter insofar as they increase their ability to control the rest of society.
You’ll be able to hear a pin drop while listening for a Marquette response to the violation - yet again - of University policies regarding solicitation. I guess the one good thing about the policy is that Marquette student’s don’t have to cower in fear about fundamentalist Christian students passing out pamplets urging them to re-examine their faith. That’s intolerable - but promoting the gay lifestyle is sure to get the MU seal of approval.
We’ll have information on the specific literature within the hour.

Tribune Copies Warrior, Once Again
Written by Brian on October 4, 2006 – 7:15 am -Yesterday’s Marquette Tribune (10-3) carried a story by Colleen McGrath titled ‘Students stretched thin by insufficient financial aid’. The story quotes, among others, Director of Financial Aid at Marquette, Daniel Goyette.
As Professor John McAdams noted last Friday, the Tribune seems to be in the odd habit of mimicking it’s conservative counterpart at Marquette, the Warrior.
It is not surprising, then, to see that the Warrior’s own Colleen Gallagher penned her own financial aid-related story for last Wednesday’s (9-27) issue of the Warrior, titled, ‘Marquette students average highest 4-year debt among comparable schools’.
While McGrath’s article focuses on a single student complaining about the loss of his financial aid, Gallagher’s article includes information most students probably wish they would have known prior to accepting their letter of admittance to Marquette:
When compared to the other schools Marquette students considered, Marquette had the highest amount of average student debt. U.S. News & World Report also stated that in 2004, the two public schools, U of I and UW-Madison, had average student debts of $15,100 and $16,159, respectively. Similarly, Loyola University’s average student debt was $18,575, while St. Louis University had an average student debt of $22,534.
Gallagher’s excellent article ends with the result of the Marquette experience that dishes out less aid and incurs more loans: “Receiving less in gift aid, students at Marquette have to borrow more in proportion to the school’s cost than students at other schools.”

Doctoral Student Silenced at Marquette University
Written by Brandon Henak on September 8, 2006 – 11:49 am -Marquette University’s free speech record has again reared it’s ugly head in a new example of campus censorship. What began with the forced removal and seziure of a support our troops table and continued through the attempted expulsion of a Dental School blogger is again evidenced in the silencing of a doctoral candidate, Stuart Ditsler. Stuart recently became the target of the pro-big-government crowd here at Marquette when a quote that he posted on his door (a place that usually houses the thoughts of liberal professors) was removed and he was reprimanded in this departmental memo.
I had several complaints today about a quotation that was on the door of CH 132F. I’ve taken the quotation down. While I am a strong supporter of academic freedom, I’m afraid that hallways and office doors are not “free-speech zones.” If material is patently offensive and has no obvious academic import or university sanction, I have little choice but to take note.
What was this egregious quote you might ask?
As Americans we must always remember that we all have a common enemy, an enemy that is dangerous, powerful, and relentless. I refer, of course, to the federal government. - Dave Barry
Absolutely ridiculous. We allow the decidedly unCatholic, even anti-Catholic (and anti-life) teachings of Daniel McGuire but if someone doesn’t like the government, large or small, they are censored and chastised. Marquette University needs to stop engaging in doublespeak and selective censorship and start applying their policies in an even, fair fashion.

Marquette University Basketball Coaches Rollin’ in Hummers
Written by Brandon Henak on August 17, 2006 – 12:24 pm -It is common knowledge that those involved in Marquette’s Basketball program enjoy a number of perks for their considerable contribution to the Marquette community. Details on the perks however, are not usually disclosed. A recent sighting of 7 brand new, shiney yellow Hummer H3s in the parking lot outside the Al McGuire Center sparked even more interest in which perks are personal and which are funded by the school.

A source within the MU Athletics program has confirmed that these new Hummer H3s were leased by Marquette University for the assistant coaches of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams. After a cursory review, I was only able to find three Hummer dealers in Wisconsin.

Who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Marquette University?
![]() |
John F. Bergstrom
Chair of the Marquette BoardJohn F. Bergstrom, Bus Ad ’67, was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 1994, was elected vice chair in 2001, and was elected chairman of the board in 2003.
He is chairman and CEO of Bergstrom Corp. in Neenah, Wis., which he founded with his brother, Richard. Today their business has 24 auto dealerships, employs 1,600 people and is one of the top 50 auto retailers in the United States. Time Magazine named Bergstrom the outstanding automotive dealer in the U.S. in February 2003.
Seems simple to me. Even logical. I don’t really agree with tuition dollars being spent in this way, even if the H3s are from Bergstrom’s dealership and are extremely discounted. It seems to conflict with Marquette’s constantly professed “social justice” effort, not to mention common fiscal sense in this time of high gas prices.
This is much like the recent coffee coersion incident, if you are basing your decisions on sound business logic (maybe these Hummers will help bring in talent?), great, but realize that you are speaking out of both sides of your mouth when you preach an almost socialist strain of social justice and rely on capitalist cost benefit analysis.
